Lightbulb Dry Skin

My Golden has dry skin. Itching and scratching....she's miserable!!
No fleas by the way...
Other than changing her food (we have her on Science Diet), oatmeal shampoo with conditioner, and meds from the vet......What can we do?
We have an appointment for Monday with the vet again.
Any suggestions?

I asked the same thing not too long ago:
http://www.prodoggroomingsupplies.co...ad.php?t=13688

What I did to change (and has helped)
I got fish oil from the pet store and put it on Denali's food 3 times a week

I mix wet food in Denali's food (Nutro Natural dry and wet is what she gets)

Change her food. No, really, what kind of formula is it? There are lots of things that she could be allergic to.

I highly recommend that you give her some fish oil capsules for humans, at least you know then that you are giving hera quality product. Give her one capsule 3 times per week. I would also recommend the BARF diet but that is an individual choice.

Itching and scratching can be due to a variety of reasons such as atopic allergy which is an allergy to polens in the air and hence are causing an allergic reaction or contact allergy which means that she may be allergic to things that she comes into bodily contact with, i.e. grass, weeds, nylons, etc.

Could also be dietary allergy, meaning that she may be allergic to certain proteins or cereals.

the one other thing that i see a lot is dry, flaky, itchy skin in the dry winter months. is it cold where you live? a lot of dog's and human's suffer from this season. if this is the case then definately go with a gentle oatmeal shampoo and even oatmeal conditioner. hope she feels better soon!

Be careful with Fish oils, they contain Vit A which can be toxic in high levels. You can give fish oil : salmon or Cod liver about once or twice a week.

What you want to give for a shiny healthy coat is flax oil. Flax oil is extremely healthy for your dogs coat and helath. It is high in vit E and omega's which are awesome for coat, eyes and general health. Good for you too. Vit E is a soluable vitamin , like C and the body doesn't store it so you do not have to worry about it accumulating like you do with Vit A.

I actually feed milled flax seed in the dogs food but you can get capsules at the drug store in with the vitamins in the vitamin aisle.
