I use a variety of treats when training with my dogs to keep their interest and enthusiasm. I have a gigantic box of Cheerios that I use as training treats, as well as bags of beef flavored/chicken flavored treats I buy from dollar general stores.

I don't do this, but many people will cook little liver or chicken treats.

Whatever treat I train with, I make sure that it is extremely small and quick to eat. I don't want my dogs looking on the ground for crumbs or spending too much time chewing their treats.

My dogs also get raw bones/marrow bones to snack on and keep them busy. My mom used to buy those awful raw hides, but they never cleaned the teeth and we almost had a dog choke on one. Lets not even mention they have no nutritional value to my dogs. So, now they eat marrow bones that last for weeks on end, clean their teeth extremely well, and are actually good for them!

I don't feed any rawhides, hooves, smoked bones, and he may get a raw bone very rarely. For chewing, he has greenies, then a nylabone & a kong.

Most of the stuff that I get at the store is pretty unhealthy and full of stuff that I don't want to have my dog loaded up on.

For store bought treats, I have bought... Rollover rolls, which I believe is actually supposed to be food, but it's very rich, so it makes a good treat.
Solid Gold Turkey Jerky
Nutro Natural Choice - Lamb & Rice Sticks
Zuke's Natural Peanut Butter...

But more often, I head to the refrigerator for some human goods. He mostly gets [and loves] fruits and veggies. He likes apples, carrots, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, bananas, broccoli, etc, etc. Whole grain cereal is also a good healthy treat as well.

For training at home I use Charlie Bears as I have a small dog and they are only 3 calories each. In class I use cut up pieces of Natural Balance lamb rolls as she will do just about anything for a piece of that. For something to chew on I use Nylabones.

Moo, I had totally forgot! Good for you for mentioning fruits and veggies!

I know a woman that is very successful using cut up green beans(no salt) as training treats.

Whenever there is actually bananas at my house I pop one in the freezer until it is hard. My dogs love munching on the frozen bananas!

Moo, I hate to be so contradictive of your post, but I hate to recommend greenies. They have been known to kill dogs of all sizes. They are hard for the dog's to digest, and there really isn't anything it gives the dogs nutrionally. After having learned about dog nutrition not even a year ago, I'm really picky about what my dogs are allowed to eat now.

Kongs filled with peanut butter and other wonderful treats are great as well. It will keep a dog busy for hours!

Also, when the dogs have eaten all the meat off of their marrow bones and slightly lose interest in them, I will put some peanut butter and treats in the middle of them where the marrow used to be.

Though dogs LOVE these wonderful treats, make sure to not over do it. Also, for whatever treats they get, they get excersize as well. You don't want a fat dog, after all!

I think a frozen kong with a mixture of peanut butter and dry food makes a good treat.

I know, I know. I've never had a problem with Greenies myself. Kirby has never been a gulper, and he chews his food. So despite horror stories, I have no fears with Greenies and this dog... And I know the nutrients are kind of at nil, but we just have a thing for Greenies. I think of it as Kirby's one guilty pleasure.

Kongs, they are hollow, rubber treats, for mostly heavy chewers. They come in various sizes & stiffness for various dogs and they chewing. The hole can be filled with anything that will fit.

They are also a lot of fun to play fetch with, since they are not round, they do not bounce straight, so the dog cannot cheat.
