Grooming a samoyed with to much fur
Hello! My name is Madeleine and Im a new member. I have a beutiful samoyed called Fanny - or should I say used to be beutiful. She is 8 years old and have in her older days grow a lot of fur on her belly - and I mean a lot! I wonder if it something I can do the reduce some of the hair and still have a natural look? She is not the long-legged type and all that hair make her look fat and very low on her legs. Here in sweden its almost a crime to clip och trim natural breeds like the sammy - but I have heard that its done in the US so maybe somebody here knows what to do (or what i absolutly shouldn´t do)?

With a long hair dog NEVER!!!! shave it down, that only makes the hair come back thicker and much more worse the it was before. What I would try first is get a rake and see how much undercoat comes off. This may help it alot. You will be very surprised at how much hair will come off and how much better the dog will look. Hope this helps.

Hello!
I agree - I don´t think cutting it off is a good solution. But I still wonder - Pomeranians have similar coat - and they are trimmed? Its not a total shave I was thinking about - just a litte to make her look better in the showring. I have tried to pulling it off with my fingers but I dont get the roots out - the hair breaks instead - maybe not so good either. A rake? Sorry for my bad english - but do you mean like somekind of comb? I groom her very often (I`m getting a poodle so my sammys can be left alone, ha ha..) Nothing comes off when I comb her unfortunaly. Maybe Its just to realise that her showdays are over - or try to show her only when she is shedding. Is there any Pom- owners here or anybody else who know more about how their coats react when its cut? Thank you! |

Under the belly is so sensitive I would be careful with a rake, unless it is a plastic pin one, but the results are slow with plastic. Yes it it a comb, I used a square one, but never on the belly before, so be gentle.
What you really need to do is get the undercoat out, not the top, so lift the fur up, then brush out from the root, start at the bottom of the belly working your way up, it is easier, and you can see better than working from the top down. I also found if I washed the dog first then used a blow dryer, using the comb at the same time, washing makes the hair folicles open up, but don't wash and blow dry without combing or it will matt up even more. |

I also forgot to say, people came to me with Poms, but I refused to clip them, it made the fur bush up and stand on end, rather than lay flat. The only area I would do for them was on their bottom, the rest was the wash and brush as I already described.
