I'm still going to feed Lilly raw bones, I just think it's a case of supervising them while they have them (like you should do with everything, anyway.) I do think that certain bones and definitely cooked bones are dangerous but I don't think the raw bones Lilly has are a worry, at least not to me.

Yes i know what you mean, I still feed them they are munching in them now, but i give knuckle bones so there is less chance of a small bone causing a prob, but if i see then getting a small pices then the bone is thrown away, i have not found a better tooth cleaner than them so i will continue, but I also feel it depends on your dog and hwo they eat their bones

It's the same thing as the argument against greenies. people just drop a bone in front of their dog and ignore it, and then freak out about how the dog ate the entire thing and got an impaction.
If you can't supervise dogs while they chew, then give them things that they can't ingest. (large kongs stuffed with treats, for example) I would NEVER, EVER give my dogs raw bones without keeping an eye on them while they eat. Some raw feeders also far overdo the amount of bones that they feed their dogs, IMO. While the typical calcium/phosphorus ratio is 50/50 for dogs, people seem to take that to mean 50% bone and 50% meat (I did when I was new to it.). That could cause severe problems as well. It all comes down to supervision. If my dog eats a pound of bone and winds up needing a lot of vet care, that is MY FAULT for not watching him, and not that of the bone.

I am sorry but I do not agree. But I do agree with what Rip said.
If you are feeding raw knuckle, leg, or the hard beef bones that the dog can not get pieces off of then you are fine. You could run into trouble with other types like, raw beef ribs bones that shatter when chewed. I only feed my dog the hard leg and soft knuckle bones. NEVER feed cooked bones they turn brittle when cooked and then can cause serious harm to your dog. I feed raw chicken neck almost everyday to my dogs they are fine. You can feed raw chicken carcasses with no issues. I do remove the leg bones from chicken and also the hard wing bones but I leave the wing tips. You are better off feeding raw bones then not. The marrow has so much good nutrtion in it and the bones keep the dogs teeth clean and as we know it is detrimental to a dogs helath to have bad teeth and gums. Have bad oral health causes other health issues as well for the stomach, liver, kidneys etc. Same goes for humans. |

Well as with all things dog related people will always be divided, i know what to feed and what not to feed due to how my dogs eat their bones, but for a new dog owner, then articles like the above will confuse them, and it makes it hard for them to know what to do or feed
