Lightbulb Spaying Questions

We are going to spay Stormie and maybe Dixie, less heats to be bothered with. We are also considering selling them to good homes.
We have 6 dogs. 3 males and 3 females. We wanted to breed Dakota but we probably wont because he had entropion and it could be hereditary.

So I was wondering what all goes on when a female is spayed, how long does it take for her to recover, is she in much pain, does the doctor give you pain killers for her? Price doesnt matter.

I never had female dogs so I don't really know, but I'm pretty sure that they go just stay overnight and come home the next day. But it isn't painful for them and I don't think they give painkillers unless there is a problem.

When Lilly was spayed she stayed overnight and she did bleed more than they expected but they got it under control easily, she was quiet and sore for a few days but it wasn't long before she was back to normal. She was running around happily by the third day.
She didn't have any pain killers, we just kept an eye on her and were told to bring her in if she had any problems but luckily she didn't.

A spay is the equivalent to a hysterectomy in a human. They remove the uterus and ovaries. It's an abdominal surgery.. so they are most likely very sore afterwards. Not just a "little". As for pain meds, and staying overnight and such.. depends on your vet. Some vets will send home the dog the same day in the afternoon/late evening, some will keep them overnight. Some are real good about giving pain management, some not so much. It also depends on what they use to pre-medicate. If they use morphine injectable, they don't need to use any post-op pain meds, or at least minimally. If they don't use a long acting pain med, then they should send something home.

The post-op period is usually keeping the dog quiet for 7-10 days until the suture removal. They may need to wear an e-collar so that they don't lick, bite, etc at the incision site.

And expect a HUGE clipped area. They do this so that they can make their incision longer if needed. The typical spay clip is from the diaphragm/zyphoid process/bottom of ribcage to the top of their hindquarters. Sometimes you'll see a tiny incision with all this space clipped, but its better to be safe than sorry.

Also.. some vets don't use any exterior sutures and will use surgical glue, if the incision is small enough.

Any other questions? I think I answered a bunch.

Good post, Weezy.
I would spay them. It's better for them in the long run.

Denali was sore for about 1 1/2 days - at least where she showed it.

Depending on your vet, there are many different options out there now. We had options such as painkillers before/during surgery, pain killers after, to have an IV in her in case something would go wrong and they'd have to get her more blood / meds, did we want laser or the knife... I forget what other options we had, there were 5 total options and we choose to get the best for our puppy!

They said with Denali to watch stairs with her and just try to keep her energy level down (like that was going to happen). She did fine, probably doesn't even remember it now
