Hi, it's Faithey here!
Hi everyone, this is Faithey. As you all know, my mom is a trainer. She thinks that I should know everything. I don't mind learning new stuff. Most of it's fun anyway. But in order to learn some things, Mom takes me in the car to go to new places. It makes my tummy hurt and my head spin. I always load up in the car very good because I know where we are going is fun, but I just don't like feeling sick on the way there. Mom needs to take me for longer trips now, too. I have to go for several hours sometimes, and that really doesn't feel good. Mom told me that on the longer trips, there is medicine I can take that will make me feel better. She hasn't given me any yet. She told me that you guys gave her a bunch of ideas for shorter trips and we are trying them out. But, on the longer trips, I want to feel better! If you guys don't mind, can you think of some things that might help me when I am in the car for several hours? Please!

We are talking to the vet this week about trying some out, but since collies are so medicine sensitive, I have to test them on her before she gets higher dosages. I will try the ginger ale though. Thanks.

LMAO!!! I can't believe I once thought it was over. Silly, naive girl I was. It was a temporary fix, oy!!! I wish I could figure out what I have done differently since I posted that. |

Kiev gets car sick too. She WANTs to go on car trips but gets sick when we get in. I figured it out though. It's the trees. Her head just follows them.. they go by... and by... and by... and.. oh no! She's gonna ****! I put her in the backseat now and roll down the window. She sits in the back so she doesn't crawl in my lap or jump out. She just enjoy the wind and stays focused ahead of her. She doesn't watch those stupid trees. She feels the breeze and forgets it all. I'm not saying this will work for you but it sure did make a differencee for me.

We had a Sheltie once that got car sick within 5 min of being in the car, regardless of where we were going. We tried opening the window and putting her in a crate so she couldn't see everything whiz by.
We finally had to accept that we had to give her a pill before car rides. I can't remember the name of it but it was like doggy Dramamine. When I picked Cali up in California and flew back with her, I was holding her in the crook of my arm. I looked down and she was doing the drooling/I'm getting ready to hurl thing - which she did all over my sleeve. So, then as she got older, I would take her out in the car just half a block, then a few days later, a whole block. I'd give her a treat each time we got home. I just kept stretching out the time and distance. Now, she's fine. We just took an 12 hour trip at Christmas. |

That is what I have been doing for 2 years with Faithey, lol. I'm glad it worked out for Cali, I just wish that it would for Faithey. I have taken as many steps as possible to get her used to the car. She has sat in the car without it even running and still drools. It's fear, I think, not actual sickness. Anticipation makes her crazy. I don't know what else to do at this point other than pop the pills. I HATE giving her meds, too. But if I plan on driving longer distances, I have to have her used to driving. Oh well, let's see what the vet has to say.

I don't think it's early memories, but I wouldn't rule it out. I think it's just the anxiety of everything. She is afraid of it, but I don't know why. She loads up wonderfully. Just hops in without thinking twice. If I tell her we are going for a ride, she gets excited. She just drools beyond comprehension. It just drains out of her like Niagra Falls. She sometimes throws up and her eyes are glazed in the car.

There is a pill! But for life of me can't remember name of it. It was several yrs ago. I do remember my vet saying "Happy Hour" pills. It did work, it wasn't so much for barfing but for anxiety.
