I Need Your Help

There is a woman I work with who owns two Siberian Huskies, Winddancer (I'm not sure if I spelled her name correctly) and Samluka (I know I spelled that one correctly). She's had these dogs for quite a few years but is in quite a pickle. I really want to help because I have you guys as such a great resource here. So really, I can't help as much as I could without your guys' help.

The woman who owns these dogs can no longer afford to keep her babies. The costs for meds and the vet is too much for the salary of a waitress. I'd take them if I could afford to but she makes more than I do and she can't afford it and Kiev might not get along with Wind.

Here's one problem. She really doesn't want to "get rid" of them. She wnats to be able to visit them; she doesn'y want them to think she's abandoned them. She wants them to go to a good home in the area so she can pay visits.

I'm not expecting anyone here to sya, "I'll take them!" because I know a Husky (let alone two Huskies) cannot be happy with any kind of person. She wants the new owners to understand Husky behavior, to know that these dogs are escape artists, dig, chew, jump fences, cannot be let off leash, must be exericised. The typical Husky behavior. But the help I do need is where can I find a shelter or rescue that takes special requests like only adopting out in a certain area, and possibly to the approval of her instead of the rescue/shelter? She doesn't want to lose them, but she can't afford to keep them.

Any help from anyonw would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's just a starting point where I can do my own reseach (I'll already be looking). Just a simple website I can look at and/or show her would be appreciated beyond belief. I really need your help. My favorite breed and a coworker I'm fond of, I don't want to see them euthanized or in a bad home.

Here's some info about the dogs for your own curiosity and hopefully to better help you help us. These are veyr important facts about the dogs; it shows why it will be difficult to find them homes and hopefully find some advantages for the owner.

Wind:
Beuatiful Husky. She's spayed and eight years old. I don't think you'd guess it right away though; this girl can still scale a six foot fence so people need to be aware that they can't trust either dog to return when called. If Wind is not exercised enough, she'll find other ways to amuse herself and she's quite the escape artist. The owner says she can even scale an eight foot fence. Wind is an indoor dog. She's potty trained and has no trouble going in the correct place. The indoor part is very important. She's not used to strict outside and if she is stricltly outside, she'll escape easily. She's also got Colitis (hope I spelled right). But don't let the fact that she's clever enough to escape make you think badly of her. She's still close to human and greatly depends on human interaction. She's great buds with Samluka. However, she is alpha so a home with current pets must have submissive pets. She's alpha and she will prove it one way or another. When she wnats to cuddle though she'll cuddle. Otherwise she;ll be like, "Well, I think I'll just lay over here instead..." Such a nice personality though. When you think of either my girl or GermanShepherd's Husky, Sid, you should think of Wind. She's excellent with kids, loves to play. She's queen of the house but in a way that can make you smile and say, "Yo go, girl! Show 'em who's boss!" A dog you can respect; a dog very important in Samluka's life as well.

Samluka:
Samluka is a sad story. Samluka is a ten year old nuetered male. He was a rescue to begin with and he came from a very abusive envirotnamet. The owner has had him for about six or so years and even though he can trust someone, he'll still kinda lower his head in a submissive way when you pet him. His last home was THAT bad. So you can see, especially in Samluka's case, why this woman does not want the dogs to think they're abandoned. Samulka has already been down the road of abuse and abandoment in one setting and is still hauinted by it. It will be difficulkt for him to go through that again. The other bad thigns is Samluka's got a lot of medcal problems, some of which they know was caused from the abuse. Samluka suffers from asthma, allergies (pollen, dust), laragiul paralysis on his left side, and his over submissiveness toward a pat on the head. He doesn't fear bite though and if Wind doesn't provide enough cuddling for you, Samluka makes up for what she doesn't give. He is such a BIG cuddlebug. The fact that he's so into the affection is a miracle in itself since the treatment of his last owner was so horrible. Samluka might not scale a six foot fence. The dog sounds like he's coughing up a lung when he walks sometimes. It sounds bad but in a way it's "normal" because of his condition. He wants nothing more than to be loved though honestly. He's so submissive and loves to love. He's great with older children. Younger children might not understand that they can't be too rough with him and could hurt him.

Here's the thing though, these two cannot be seperated. The depression will be too great, they both need each other. Even someone wanting to help poor Samluka needs the queen too becaause seperating them would be too devastating to both. Samluka needs Wind; Wind needs Samluka.

Any help would be so great. Again, I'm not expecting to see volunteers to take them in but just kinda, point me in the right direction? How can we get these two to go to a home TOGETHER close by?

Please help. I don't want to see these two unique dogs hurt.

I don't know of anyone who would be suitable for them, sorry I can't be of much help. But you could try advertizing them on petfinder and see if anyone on there is interested. They sound like awesome dogs and I sure hope that they get the home they deserve!

The best thing would be to contact a Husky rescue near you, and just talk to them, they may be able to work with a request. Who know they may have someone already looking for a pair. You dont know till you call.
I would suggest your friend make a donation to the rescue when she gives them up, the rescue may become more accomidating. It doesn't have to be alot, just something in good faith. I realize money is tight, but 30-50 dollars can go along way.
Check on PetFinder to find Husky rescues in Florida.

I'm thinking of offering the fostering idea to her but will the shelter maybe not want that? I'm afraid they won't want someone who may only help with just those two dogs, which is still a help to the rescue since they won't have to provide space for the dogs and won't have to spend time making sure the proper medications are given. Not to mention the trama that may go on for Samluka. He's already been through this. He'll see those dogs and cages and he'll remember. I don't know if she'll foster and I don't know if she;ll stick around and help even after the dogs are gone or if shell want to house more pets while she has her two dogs. I have to talk to her and see what she thinks. These dogs can't be in cages while they wait to find someone. Samluka is the one who won't be able to handle it and he needs Wind to be happy so they can't be seperated. Wind won't even know what's going on while Samluka will just suffer from a flashblack. And the two will be fostered by someone they know, which takes awya even more stress from the dogs. she still wants to be able to visit them though. I'm sure if she fosters the rescue will want to keep her as a foster. She understands Huskies so a Husky rescue will want her. She does work though. I could see her wanting to help but I don't know how she'll be able to handle fostering huskies once hers are gone; if it'll be too emotional to accompolish or if she;ll want to do it more to help more Huskies like hers. I dunno, I'll have to talk to her.

Id say put adds in the local newspaper and find someone local yourself. I wouldnt go through the shelter just because of the situation. She could interview people herself and decide who would be best. Thats my suggestion.

Thank you very much, I do appreciate it

The woman still has them I think. Their medical bills are just outrageous. I haven't talked to her since I tried to help her. Dunno what she's done.
