New to grooming

I'd like to groom my labradoodle but her fine hair seems to just go through the clippers without cutting it all. The clipper blades were just sharpened by a professional. Is there something I need to do different?

Maybe you're using the wrong clippers? They make several different kinds. I know my mom is a groomer and she has a bajillion differnt scissors and blades and such. It's what she went to grooming school for (well parcially), to learn what blade to use on what fur type and/or breed.

Clippers ... or blades (on the clipper)?

For part of the grooming, I'm going to use a clipper with a comb attached to the blades to keep the hair the same length.

For a Labradoodle (or a dog with fine hair) ... which clipper and blade is recommended?

How long is your dogs hair? Each blade has a number, the higher the number, the shorter the cut, ie; #3 will leave hair 1/2 inch, #4-1/2 to 1/4 inch. When using clip-on combs, you use a #10 or#15 blade and attach comb to it, follow length guide that came with comb set. If your dogs hair is going through the blade with no clipping, you need to use a higher numbered blade. Hope this helps!

Question Labradoodle grooming

Thanks for all the help!
  • The clipper that I'm using is Oster Lucky Dog model 113 series E.
  • The blade size is simply called "Fine" with a number 913-61
  • I'm using a #10 (1 1/4") comb attachment
Our dogs hair is about 3" long right now and as I move the clippers over her back, very little of the hair actually gets cut ... even though it goes through the comb and blades.

I'll bet you are driving your dog insane contantly running the thing over her.

Perhaps if I continuously ran it over her it would ... however the 3 or 4 times that I did, it didn't bother her at all. I’ve acclimated her to the clipper sound and touch during the last month by clicker training. She's as used to them as her slicker brush.

I would be interested in knowing what you suggest however.

I wouldn't use a number 10 on a lab/poolde mix, how short do you want her coat to be?

Oster's #10 comb attachment is 1 1/4" .... which will leave her hair 1 1/4" long. It is the largest I have found available.

My problem is the blades are not cutting her hair ... but while we're on the subject, what size comb would you use?
