Canned vs dry dog food--Polyuria????

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone has a problem with feeding their dog canned dog food. I have a beagle who has addisons. A couple months ago is when she was diagnosed and in order to get her to eat I started feeding her canned food and dry mix. Now I realize that this disease can make them thirsty and urinate (a lot!!). But this problem also coinsides with the canned food I have been giving her. I am going to try to get her to just eat the dry food only for a while and see if it makes a difference. Just wondering if any one else has run into this problem???
Thanks.
Nina

The only problem that i have had with feeding canned is my dogs have more gas and they have loose stool. Really if its what she will eat than thats better than nothing. Not all that great for a dogs teeth though.

I have had to completely change my male Gino's food as he quit eating on strong meds. I am using now Nature's Blend chicken dry and half can of Pro Plan puppy as he is not eating alot and feels he needed more protein in the puppy.
It has been just terrible to get him to eat enough as he is a large Shepherd and long bodied to look thinner normally. He is drinking alot, did not know if the meds or canned food is doing it for he peed one night by the door a river. Thank goodness I had an old throw to catch it some.? I never use canned food only in puppy food when I start to wean to give more flavor so they eat. If u need to use it for the dog to eat do not fear anything so it eats. If it eats without it better off I personally think so.

A thirsty dog will drink more in on a dry food, I would stick with a good wet food, make sure you feed quility, itsa myth that dry food keeps the teeth clean it doesnt, bones will do that for you

It may be a myth that dry food keeps the teeth clean, but it definately isn't a myth that wet food can really cause the plaque and tarter build-up.

But, sometimes when there's an illness involved, plaque and tarter have to take a backseat and be removed another way.

Is there enough moisture in canned food to cause a dog to pee more than usual?

No usually a dog fed only on canned food will not drink as much as a dog on dry, most canned foods contain at least 70% water, problems occur when a dog fed dry doesn't drink enough for the kidneys to function properly, as with humans all dogs are different, the quality of the food will also play a major factor in how much the dog drinks as some foods contain salt
