ivormec

has anyone used ivormec to deworm their dog. if i decide to use it i will contact my vet first but i just wanted to check with you all for any bad experiences. also i have visited a site that has many different types of ivormec so if you did use it please let me know which specific one you used. thanks

Dear Mojo:

I am a veterinarian. I assume that when you write Ivormec, you mean Ivomec. I do not recommend using Ivomec as a dewormer. The active ingredient in Ivomec is Ivermectin. Ivermectin is very effective for preventing heartworm disease in dogs (given as a once a month chewable tab as Heartguard)and for treating mange in dogs. It is not, however, a very effective intestinal dewormer. For intestinal deworming in dogs, I like to use Strongid, Nemex, or Panacur.

Furthermore, you should not ever give ivermectin unless you are certain that your dog is negative for heartworm. If your dog was positive and you gave ivermectin, the rapid death of the juvenile heartworms can cause a dangerous, even fatal reaction in the dog. Never use Ivermectin in Collies, because in certain lines of Collies, a fatal allergic reaction occurs.

I've used it on horses before and I know that it will get rid of most anything they're going to have. It's also one of the safest horse wormers. But still check with your vet.

From what I understand, Not just Collies but any herding dog can have this fatel reaction to ivermectin alpollo
