Can anyone help me, as I am worried about how to introduce my puppies to grooming. I don't want to get them off to a bad start.

You could start by introducing the brush to them. Just let them see it. Use at first a brush that is not going to pull or cause any kind of pain. Let them get use to brushing and enjoy being groomed. Once they are ok with that then move on to the other types of brushes. Just take it slow, talk to them. If you see that they are afraid do not push the issue.

Make It Fun
You can sing to them or keep telling them they are such a good girl/boy or pretty. With the first bath I always recommend you put one or two pieces
of kibble or a couple liver treats in the sink before you add water so they will associate that tub with something good. |

You should start handling puppies as soon as you can. That includes touching thier feet. Taking a pair of nail clippers and just trimming a little (only if needed). Taking a washcloth and running it over them is also preparing them for grooming.
If they are a dog that will need clipping or professional grooming, I would take them to the groomer just to get them used to the noise and smells. They don't have to have any work done, but be sure to praise. |

Start by making grooming an enjoyable process. It should not be something where your dog has to stand still for an hour while you scissor/brush/bathe him. Get his toys/bones/treats and favorite games involved.
You can introduce him in several fun ways. Lay out any grooming supplies you have (that aren't going to hurt him) like brushes and shampoo bottles ect. If he shows any interest in them.. sniffing, walking near them.. anything.. give him a treat and say good boy. Run brushes lightly over him.. if he accepts, give him treats. Have him chew on his favorite bone while you brush or scissor a few hairs. My basic point is it should be more then just grooming.. it should involve play. Then, he will associate grooming with fun and enjoy it.
