Long nails

Is there a way to work with a dogs nails to get the quick to shorten up? The nails on Jimmy's front paws are pretty long. In my other post I mentioned that his past owner didn't make grooming him regularly a priority so I'm sure clipping his nails wasn't a priority either. The quick has grown out pretty far on his front paws and I'm wondering if it's too late to work with them to shorten them up some. I have read up on how to keep a dogs nails groomed with a dremel but I'm not ready to make that step yet as we just got Jimmy and I need to take things slow with him and work him into a regular grooming schedule. Any advice would be appreciated.

What I would do is use large nail nippers we use to clip the tips off then get a metal file and file the rest off to be safe than sorry to cause bleeding. Our Dollar store handles nice large metal files on both sides one rougher than the other side and u can a nice smooth nail and takes it back to where u want it safely. Good luck and good for the dog to get used to also

If you keep them as short as they can go on a regular basis (like once a week) the quicks will start shortening up a bit, as well. Filing or dremeling, as suggested, can also get the nails shorter without cutting the quick.

I clip my dogs nails at least every 2 weeks then use the dremel or before I got it a file to take the edges off. If you are going to be cutting them short you should have some Quikstop in case you get them to bleed. You might end up bandaging a foot due to too short of nails because if they bang that foot it will start bleeding all over again.
