How do you know/tell when..

How do you tell when dogs need their **** glands emptied? I don't know how to do it- but I think my mom does since she's a groomer and probably has to know- but- just for my reference- when do you empty them? Do they start smelling or soemthing?

The sacs become impacted and uncomfortable. Dogs with impacted **** sacs usually scoot their rear on the ground in an attempt to empty the glands. Some dogs will lick their **** area and other dogs will chase their tails.

A rag or tissue is held up to the anus and both sides of the **** area are squeezed. If the secretion is very pasty, this method may be inadequate to empty the sacs.

If scooting continues for more than a few days after sac emptying, the sacs should be re-checked. For some individuals, it takes several sac emptyings in a row before the sacs stay emptied. If the sacs are empty and scooting is persisting, another cause (such as itchy skin, tapeworms, or even lower back pain) should be pursued. This is a highly individual situation. The best recommendation is to let the pet tell you when the sacs are full. If the pet starts scooting again, it is time to bring him in.

sorry all i messed up and posted twice

Oh ok.. scooting seams to be a sign. But should I have them reguarly done .. ? I know that merrow said if there's no problem then not to.. but is it better to have the vet or someone empty them.. like is that more healthy..?

I personally think that it should be done every month or two, regardless of whether or not there's a problem. It doesn't hurt them to have it done regularly, and it avoids the potential problems of them becoming impacted, or emptying on your rug.

i dont see it nessacery to have them done alot..everyone is diffrent.if you have it done and it doesnt look like it helped take him back and redo it..i would let a groomer do it..its cheaper..but usually i would wait every 2-3 monts to have ot done..but thats just me..thats if it isnt impacted

Hi, I've a 1.5 years old female French Bulldog.
I take bath for her myself & I never empty her sacs, tried few times but not success.
I saw my dog will licks her **** area sometimes, so is this mean I need to get a groomer empty it for her? But I didn't smell anything bad so far.
