Breeder questions

This is for Ellierat, Goombaya and even Sgour.

How did you guys get started in the breeding game. Did you plan it - go in stages, or did it naturally develop? Your dogs which ones were shown and what award/certificates do they hold.

I actually got started by showing my male, Charlie. He did well in the puppy stages, but once we started to go to bigger cometitions, he was often looked over b/c he has natural ears. I did meet a lady at a show, who I bought my female, Jada from. She is now my vet. Se was quite impressed with Charlie, and recommended, after all testing was complete, that I breed the two. She helped me with my pedigree research (partly b/c Jada was from a litter of hers), and helped me with Charlie's as well. Testing was done when Charlie was 3 and Jada was 2, both had excellent numbers in every category (heart, hips, elbows, etc.). I was still in school at the time, so I hadn't totally decided wether or not I really wanted to do this. I didn't want their behavior to change, and I had read this was a possibility. I read several books about breeding, on top of all the research I done on Boxer's before we bought Charlie, and decided that when she went into heat again that I would breed them. I started talking to some people my vet knew who wanted a boxer, and there were some family members as well. I had an extensive list of potential good homes for my pups, so then the next month the breeding took place. As you know it was a success, Charlie was a natural stud, and Jada is an EXCELLENT mother. I am very hapy with the way everything went. We had seven, large boxer pups, all over 1lb at birth (except two at 15 oz), and after 27 hours of labor, and 8 hours hard labor, Jada had all of them on her own.

I have done research for almost five years, on my breed and breeding. None of the reading and research can really prepare you for when the time is coming and the pups arrive. I was a nervous wreck!!! Just ask ellierat. I was there when Charlie was born, and I read all different kinds of books, but when it is your own little girl it is not the same. I worried about everything!! THe pups are a handful let me tell you, and I have A LOT of help at home, since I do have a job. The breeding was planned around this time of year so that I would have the extra hands to help me. It is a lot of work, alot of expense, and A LOT of newspaper and poo!!!

I am going to continue with breeding, Jada will have 1 or 2 more litters in the next 4 years. When I finish vet school, I will be able to help people with questions and help them along as my vet did for me. THat is also why I have decided to go on to vet school.

Firstly I have to skyke about my ribbons, I love doing this.

I have heaps and heaps of firsts, heaps and heaps and heaps of seconds.
Challenge ribbons and certificates(points to become a champion).
1 Runner up best of BREED..that's a huge ribbon, all written in gold.
1 Best puppy in Group...that's another huge ribbon, all written in gold.
Actually I am waiting on paperwork to come through so I can show Wally.
Jake was my show boy, but he died . Still can't talk about him much, please don't ask. I just mentioned him in one of my funnies in off topic.
Yes he did give Sophie a litter of puppies in the end.
I have Ellie...my pride and joy...she is Whiteisle Lady Ebony...I picked that name for her, Do you like it?
My breeding came about by an evolvement of circumstances, My parents the first to breed, Maltese and Poodles. then I moved away, got married, had kids, you know the sort of thing.
Then I really wanted a Labrador, not for showing or breeding, just as a pet, I knew nothing about them really. We had one when we were little kids, and I liked them.
I got Sophie, but didn't show, then people kept telling me she was beautiful, I should show her, so that's how it all started.
When I lost Jake, I got disheartened, we acheived soooo much, I have all the ribbons and framed photos up in my whelping room, it looks like a shrine. lol.
Here I go, shouldn't have started talking about it. .

I progressed into it. Long story but ive had dogs my whole life, not involved to the extent i am today, nor am i involved today to the extent i ultimately hope to be. Im still learning, i learn from all sorts of people. I had an influence from a breeder that was "mentor ish", but ive kind of strayed on my own. Although i keep in touch.

Cool. Did I ever tell you guys - I think you're all wonderful. You are all so helpful to everyone. I am envious of your litters of puppies.

It's hard to lose any of them. I'm sorry for your loss of Jake - Sue. One day you'll have to post his story.

My OESD b**** was ment to whlep the day before my birthday next week. But she either miscarried or had a full phantom pregnancy which has now disappeared .
We went interstate to find the right dog and everything.

She was a wonderful showdog. Our pride and joy was winning Best of Breed at the Bathurst Royal. Trophy and big championship ribbon. Then during play time with my other two dogs (both mutts) she broke a front tooth ending her winning. We still try though! Lol.

Breeding for me is a family tradition to bring well bred dogs into the circulation. My grandmother breed Corgies she was very well known too. My mother bred OESD's, and now it's my turn. Well she's still doing it all. But I'm the one who trains and shows the dogs, so it's a joint venture.

Actually, do any of you have any ideas to help her take next time she's mated. The downside is that she has to be Artificially Insaminated. But help is always greatfully recieved.

My family have always been into dog breeding,
My mom breeds goldens, my older brother breeds borzoi's, my dad has always bred his own working collies and now i breed pointers. I was always interested in showing and pointers and when Jodie did well in the show ring i decided to follow the family tradition and breed too. I didnt buy her with the intention of breeding her but i did research my lines and everything because i wanted a showring winner. She turned out to be a great mom and produces beautiful puppies.
I did have a second b**** who i intended to breed but she bit my brother when she was one and a half (about three yrs ago now) and i had her destroyed because i refuse to keep a dog that is a known biter, its just not responsible.
Jodie who is now 7 was my first (and so far only) breeding b****, she was lightly shown as a puppy and juvenile and won two best of breed certificates and one reserve best in show certificate at champ (rated) shows before she was retired from the show ring to breed.
She's had three litters now and is going to be speyed next month as i really dont want her to have another. Her first litter produced two champions (out of eight) and a decorated field trial dog. I kept Willow but have never shown her or bred her, but she's a very good quality b**** and would probably have been able to go champ if she had been shown. Her second litter she only had three puppies (well she had four but one was born very weak and didnt survive), one is a champion, and a second is well on the way, just looking for that third certificate. High hopes for the third litter which was born earlier this year. They are by a different dog to the first two so we're interested to see how they turn out.
Lou
