Why do you want to cut it?

Unless it's been highly matted, I'd probably keep it long, otherwise, you will have to apply sunscreen regularly.

Cutting a long haired dog short to keep them cool can do exactly the opposite. The long hair insulates them from the cold and the heat.

i reak\lly would just leave it be unless a vet recommends doing so, like debbie said long hair insulates them from the cold and the heat, i see no need too..

OH and.. i think OES dogs are so awsome, very beautiful dogs! if you have pics id love to see him!!!

Exactly, like sheep. If you cut it, the heat will be directly on his skin instead of having to work its way through the hair.

An Old English should be kept full coated for all the reasons stated above. It will take dedicated weekly raking, and cleaning of "private" areas. If you do decide to clip it, you MUST keep it out of the sun and heat, it will NOT have protection without it's coat.

I have actually seen a OES with shorthair last summer. I actually didn't recognize it at all. I had to ask the owners and they told me what he was. They cut his hair short in the summer to keep him cool. If you are not planning on showing him I don't see why you couldn't cut the fur. Just long as you don't go too short...like a shorthaired dog.

if you are coping with the coat long then leave it long - if your not the go for a shorter cut (remember his coat will never be the same once clipped) but you dont have to go short i groom an oes who has it trimmed to about 5 inches all over keeping the head longish too to keep to looking like an oes but shorter looks beautifull and the dog still looks like an oes!!
