Question Antibiotics and UTI?

Wyatt got a little sneeze and cough last week so we took him in to the vet and got him an antibiotic shot and antibiotic drops. It is better but not gone yet.

Lately he has been seeming unable to control his bladder as well as he had before. He wet inside his crate THREE times today. It's only 4 pm. I am worried that he may have a UTI.

How can I tell if it is a UTI? Could the antibiotics have something to do with it?

I don't think so. Depending on what the antibiotic is, it would help with an UTI. They diagnose a UTI from a urine sample. It's a simple test with immediate results.

My vet always had me try to get the first catch of the day.I had a dog where I couldn't catch the urine myself so the vet catherized the dog to get some pee.

The antibiotics would be taking care of the UTI, rather than causing it. For a UTI, you can try a supplement made by Solid Gold called Berry Balance.

If it keeps up for a few more days, I'd definately get a urine test. In my early days a hundred years ago, I would scold my little Miko for peeing on the carpet (several times over a week's time). when it turned out he had a UTI, I felt like ****.

After a while you'll get to know what is your dog's typical just being bad behavior vs. that which indicates the need for a vet check.

Yes it can depending on the anti biotic used. Just like in people an anti boitic can knock out the " good bacteria " that keep the " bad " at bay, this can cause the bad to get a foothold and cause a UTI or bladder infection.

Sign of this are -- Frequent urination
Blood in urine
Fever
Painful urination

If your dog has these signs at least call your vet and ask, a call costs nothing and can ease your mind.

Good luck and let us know how your dog is.

I have to totally agree with dobified. Those arw the signs of UTI. Some dogs are more sensitive to different antibiotics, like people. Hope you are feeding him yogurt or giving him acidiphilosus while he is on antibiotics, to save the good bacteria in the gut.

well, he certainly has had NO difficulty going! LOL He isn't painful at all but he is a tad warm. He is just peeing more frequently than usual and without any warning. I can tell he doesn't mean to, like when he wets his crate 3 times in one day. Today though, there have been no problems.
