Unhappy Ang's vet visit

Today I'm feeling pretty bummed out and could use some cheering up. I took Angel to the vets today and got some good/bad news.

I don't know if I ever said that I show her in AKC and UKC dog shows. At the last show we were at I got a chance to talk to the judge to find out what she didn't like about Angel. She said she loved everything, but her rear end. She said when she was gaiting there was something going on back there that made her concerned. My girlfriend was there when I was talking to the judge and said the same thing.

I brought her to the vets today. The good news is that she doesn't have Hip Dysplasia or any problems with her elbows....that was a big relief.

Her sockets are not formed well. She has a perfectly round ball, but it's seated only half way in the socket. The vet told me that an excellent hips the socket would be almost to the edge the ball. Right now he doesn't see any problems with the hips, but down the road she will have arthritis in them. He said thst OFA would probably never certify her...not even fair or what ever the lowest grade is. So breeding her would be out of the question.

My heart sunk. Not because I can't breed her...that was far from my mind. She is now officially retired from showing at 1 1/2 years old. It was always a dream to have one Champion dog. He told me she can be a hunting dog or do obedience, but not sure of any really active sports. We just got to wait and see what is going to happen somewhere down the road.

*This is not Angel's x-ray. This is an x-ray of hips that would be certified OFA excellent*

sorry to hear about your pooch. So young still!....don't feel bad at least her life isn't in danger right now, if it were me i'd retire her and just spoil her for the rest of her doggy life. Still take her out to parks and any other enjoyable stuff she may enjoy, she's still your baby . Make sure you give her tons of doggy kisses which she deserves *hugs* for you too

Hi Doglady. Sorry about your news. I know you're dissapointed. Maybe it could be a blessing in disguise---you won't have a Show Champ or an agility specialist but you'll be able to train her for obedience, tracking, therapy, and I'm sure many other aspects. Also, if she start to show signs of painful joints you'll know what the problem is and be able to help her. Again, I'm sorry for your dissapointing news.

That is so darn wrong Christine. I am so sorry for your trying to do something right and it goes wrong for you. I pray she will be ok for you, might as well spay her lowest if Fair that I would honor anything lower is out. OFA is tough, the ones I got in Germany at a year were done with A normal hips, Gino, Othello A Fast Normal, Rhonga A Normal long ago the nut dog titled and killed my Boston. Going to import a female and be my last one. Getting too old to buy young and raise into adults. I hope your ok honey have not heard in a while from you. Any humor send it email. lol

I'm planning on spaying her before she goes into her next heat. I just feel bad...first I lose Roo to epilepsy and now Angel. Just have to take the hand were dealt and go on. At least it wasn't a hurneated disc also...since she did take a bad fall on the ice a couple of months ago.

Then my poor girl has to go on a restricted diet. She has been chewing at her feet, scratching her ears til they bleed and chewing her backside. I had to take her off Eagle and put her on ProPlan Natural Turkey. After a month she is to go back and see how she is doing.

*sigh* I guess I should be happy that it's nothing to major. She has been the love of my life and I'm such a worry wart about anything happening to her. Today I also talked to a CGC evaluator about getting Angel into some classes. It would mean driving 50 miles one way once a week, but she will then be closer to getting certified to be a therapy dog.

doglady..how was she xrayed? Did they use anethesia? Did they use a wedge? I am just wondering because these things can effect how an xray comes out...the dog has to be TOTALLY relaxed to get a correct reading..

I actually didn't take her to my normal vet..he doesn't have the equipment to do xrays. I brought her to a vet I was recommended to. She was given a light sedative and laid onto her back with her legs to either side from what they told me. He assured me that he does plenty of these so I wasn't going to question. I did get to see the xrays of her hips and brought one to compare it with.
