Ask ahead of time what kind of pain meds they will give her....please do an internet search now on Rimadyl....it is not safe....there are other pain meds out there...Just google it and you will find out enough on your own.

message really to gsdjordyn. i have read on this site that rimadyl is not sage for many reasons but i live in spain and the biggest site in the vets stands are rimadyl. I do not need it for Fireking but what is so wrong with it that my vets are promoting it so much. Or is it that spain is not so up to date as other countries? or backhanders from the suppliers?

Is the vet doing the surgery your usual vet....one that has treated her for epilepsy? I'm sure he will take all the precautions to make sure she does not have a seizure.

Rimadyl has killed thousands of dogs...not just from liver failure either...my dog was one of them..Pfizer didn't have the warning on the label that death is a 'side effect" until they were brought up in a class action law suit. They had to pay many thousands of vet bills for the dogs they killed. It is now written on the warning labels.
Vets get BIG kick backs for selling certain drugs, just like doctors.
My dog was tested monthly for elevated levels (liver & kidney) and never had a problem...his stomache filled up with fluid and then his lungs...the did an autopsy and couldn't find anything until i read up on Rimady, then they took a piece of tissue, had it analyzed and sent to Pfizer...proof that he died from Rimadyl...they had to pay for every vet bill I had for the whole time he got sick from it...he had not been sick a day in his life until then..he had a sore leg and thats why he was on it..it works wonders on pain..they use it for surgery and anything else they can...but it kills...
I have warned others of this and thankfully a few dog owners have listened..some dogs had already started showing the same signs as my dog showed ( I didn't realize until after he was dead and I looked back on it)..
So please please do a search on Rimadyl and do not give it to your dog..you may not think it can happen to you...but trust me it can, it happened to me..my boy would still be here by my side if it weren't for Rimadyl.
Sorry to ramble but this is so very close to my heart and if just one person listens to me...

You all are exaggerating the Rimadyl thing way too much. Just like the Greenie fiasco.

Rimadyl is a safe drug. Not for all dogs, no. But same for ALL medication, they are all different. Each animal/human reacts differently to certain meds, and the majority will react the way it should. Rimadyl works very well, at what it is supposed to do. They aren't too many NSAID's out there.. so you don't really have a choice to say no to Rimadyl. Rimadyl is not an ideal drug for long term use.. however, when your dog is 14 and arthritic.. and you use it for 2 years to prolong life. What is so wrong with that?? The other hand, if you just use for a couple weeks after a surgery -- there are minimal side effects even seen/noticed.

GSD - Your story is sad, however RARE. I'm sorry that it had this effect on you and your dog.

I'm just coming from the other side of the fence.. Rimadyl is a good, safe drug for most animals. Don't shy away from it due to someone's exaggeration. Aspirin could kill a human, but look at how much we still use it! I've seen lots of cases with Rimadyl, and plenty were fine. Our hospital actually hates Pfizer, we have a closer like to Deramaxx.. but we still offer it to our patients. So the whole bit about doctors getting paid to sell products is a farse.

Hi Frankie....must agree with you on Rimadyl. All the vets I worked with used it extensively. BUT...they usually do a pre-op test to check what drugs are the safest for what dogs. In GSDjorden they might have neglected this. Like any other drug it has it's side effects, but all drugs do. Sorry to hear about your lab's knee, but they operate on dogs daily, lots of dogs have knee ops. They also use pentobarbital, I wouldn't make myself sick worrying, most vets are very conscientious when it comes to anaesthetics. If this is your regular vet, he or she knows about your dog's problems and will take great pains to see everything goes right. Don't forget, these people are vets because they love animals. Accidents do happen, same as in people hospitals, I'd say the vets take more precautions than some docs lol. Just for the record, I've been on Rimadyl for 23 yrs, and feel fine lol. Chin up old girl
