Unhappy Sam Update

Hi everyone-Well, the last 2 days, Sam hasn't eaten much of anything. I don't know if maybe his throat is sore from all the coughing and gagging he does with the lung cancer or not. He still is drinking well, and likes to go out for his walks and to play. He'll eat dog bones (the milk bone brand) and today I cooked him a half a chicken breast, and he gobbled that up. I don't know if he is tired of his food, although he as always liked it, or if this means that his time is running out. Should I just keep cooking him chicken and use that instead of his regular food? How much should he have? He weighs about 70 lbs. This happened when he first got sick, and he got so used to eating chicken, turkey, etc that he would not touch regular food. I had to let him not eat for a couple of days (although I put his food out for him every day and night) and when he got hungry he started eating again, although we had to stay by him and encourage him to eat. Today he gobbled down the chicken so fast, so maybe he is hungry but for some reason only wants chicken? I don't want him to lose any weight. How will I know when he has reached the point where nothing will help any more? I've been so happy because he has been doing so well and even the vet was happy-now I'm so scared and sad that this might be his time now. Sorry this is so long. I can't stand just waiting for him to pass on-I'm sad all the time. Well thanks for listening-it's good to know that all of you are here for support. God bless all of you and your pups. Kathy

Hey Kathy, God Bless you and Sam too!! I am certainly no expert when it comes to dogs and illness but I know I would give my pup anything he/she wanted. I believe that humans/animals, any appetite is better than none. I, again, am not an expert but if he wants chicken, that's what I would feed.
How are you feeling, Kathy?

I agree with Mara, I would give him what he wants. I really feel for what you're going through, Poppy and I are sending hugs your way. Remember we are all here for you

How are you feeling, Kathy?

I agree! I would feed him anything he wants as long as its healthy type foods. I also am no expert in ill dogs but I say something is better than nothing.

Did you make a list of the things he likes most eating certain foods, playing fetch, ect..? if so, when he doesn't enjoy those things anymore than its time to let him go.

Very sad im really sorry.

Chicken alone isn't the ideal diet. What about mixing chicken in with his regular food? I'm sorry for what you're going through. We had a dog that had cancer and near the end all I could get her to eat was lunchmeat.
