My 7 month old goldendoodle just came back from the vet with x-rays of his elbow. The x-ray showed a fracture and the vet said keep him quiet for 6 weeks and hopefully the fracture will heal, but not for sure. If it doesn't heal surgery will be required. Anyone have any experience with this, and how do you keep a pup quiet??

Hi

I'm new here and posted a requested for anyone experiencing elbow fractures in their dog and how to keep a 7 month old puppy quiet for 6 weeks, but haven't gotten a reply from anyone. Is my case really rare or am I not posting my message correctly. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated if I'm doing this wrong. I'm at my wits end trying to keep my goldendoodle quiet. The vet prescribed acepromazine for calmness but not sure if I can use it for 6 weeks????

In the future, please post new threads for new topics. The previous thread that you posted in was over 2 years old, and members tend to ignore very old resurrected threads.

If the dog is in a lot of pain, then it will probably be mostly immobile anyways. Vets always tell you to keep the dog quiet after surgery, after injury, etc, it's important not to overwork a sore part.

To what extent does the dog need to remain inactive? I think it would be appropriate to try to drain the dog with a lot of short walks (you would have to ask the vet to be sure.) Don't let her run around, and if you have to, keep her on a lead, tied to your belt loop when you are in the house and she is not crated.

Mental stimulation is often much more tiring than physical stimulation. You can work on basic obedience commands, and especially long sit-stays or down-stays and quiet draining for dogs.

Six weeks sure is a long time, good luck.
