I'm wondering - have you tried to educate yourself on what is happening to your dog, what kind of pre-natal care does she need, what to expect during delivery, etc? Why is it you're so late in the game and you don't have any idea what to do? |

Do you mean she is in labour right now, or due soon? Can you give us more details?

I hope you find someone to help you..what are you gonna do if an emergency happens? what if she needs a c-section? I am sorry but people who don't have money should not be breeding..it takes money to take care of the mom in case of emergency and to get the puppies their shots and worming meds...
with that said since it is too late to think about it now..you should contact your local vet..explain the situation and they can talk you thru a lot of it..then you can ask if they have an emergency fund for people with no money to help if something bad happens... Was this a planned breeding? |

I definitely don’t agree with breeding dogs if you can’t afford it and are not prepared or educated but I don't know your circumstances and it's already happened now, so I won't comment any more on that.
Has she been to a vet at all during the pregnancy? Was it planned and was she in good health beforehand? Have you been giving her a high quality puppy food? I strongly suggest you try and get some money and take her to get x-rayed asap. Chihuahuas are a breed which often requires emergency c-sections and the x-rays would give you an idea of what to expect size wise etc. Is the sire also a Chi? Do you have a whelping box ready? If not you’ll need to get that ready now and get her used to it. Do you have whelping supplies ready? You’ll need lots of newspaper, paper towels, old sheets, cloths, normal towels and disposable surgical gloves, sharp sterilized scissors to cut umbilical cord, haemostat forceps so you can clamp off the umbilical cord before cutting it , dental floss for tying cord after cutting it, quick stop powder in case you need to stop bleeding after cutting the cord. You'll also need scales to weigh pups and a notebook to record time of birth, weight etc, plus a bulb syringe to aspirate pups who need it. You will need a small box or basket of some kind to put the pups in while your girl is delivering the rest. It will need to be warm so have warm blankets too, plus it’s a good idea to use a heat pad or hot water bottle in there or place it near a heat lamp. It’s also a very good idea to have a good milk replacer and bottles etc in case you need them. Have you been taking her temp? You should be doing that now, twice a day in the morning and evening – take it at the same time and when she’s calm, then record it in a notebook. It can be quite an effective way of predicting when the pups will be born (doesn’t always work but it is a good idea to do it anyway). When it drops it generally means she will go into labour within the next 24 hours. There are 3 stages of labour. In stage 1 her temp can drop, she will probably want you near, she might refuse to eat, eyes might dilate, she’ll probably search for a dark place to hide, she should have a mucus discharge and they normally can’t get comfortable. Stage 2 is pre-labour, she will do things like dig, shiver, pant, lick herself a lot and have mild contractions. Stage 3 is the actual labour, she’ll have her water break, have hard contractions, shiver a lot, she will start pushing etc. (She won’t necessarily show all those signs but she will show the main ones obviously.) It is REALLY important that you have a vet you can contact if you need to. If she shows signs of difficulty, is pushing continuously without anything happening and seems distressed or you are worried then you really need to contact them immediately. I don’t know what you can do if you can’t afford it because it is very important or you could end up losing your girl and all the pups, is there any way you could get some money together in case? Do you know what to do during the actual birth? What else did you need to know? Good luck and I really hope it all turns out ok. Please keep us updated. |

Honey calm down and Lilly gave a good ton of information. Take her temp rectally, normally dogs run about 101.2 it varries, but if hers is dropping to say 99 or even 100 she is getting ready when it hits 98 she is withing 24 hours of whelping. Have a box, if u have nobody to make one, get a swimming wade pool, just watch she does not lay on one, keep a smaller box to put them in as their are birthed. Get towels and clean out the pups mouths of the fluid to help breathing easier, then rub each pup real hard to make them squeel, the more they do the stronger the heart gets. Hold it to her face to help with bonding, she will clean it on her own unless she must have a C section. I hope she is not bred to a large dog or much larger than her.? I would summon a vet to be handy and make arrangements to make payments, alot will help you out if u ask before hand and be prepared. Feed her as told you already a good quality food preferable puppy brand and keep her on it while lactating for lots of milk, keep fresh water at her all the time. Do NOT try to feed her during labor, she is most likely in very early labor now, look and u can see the vulva swelling, her breasts filling and her belly. She should have an xray if possible or scan done. Do your best to give her room, do not scream or panic. Keep her on a flat surface during whelp so the pups do not crawl into a crease and die. Keep an eye on each pup. She might not like them in a box, mine do not and its hard to keep track, but I have quite large litters, just do your best and get on here and somebody can assist you. Keep her comfortable and try to make arrangements with a vet now.
