Fireking latest

HI pals
Fireking had been doing really well for the past week or so but now not so good.
He is drinking gallons again and cannot control his urine output now.
He had an accident in the lounge this morning before I got up and also another on the top floor.
This afternoon he was asleep and twitching as if he was dreaming as they do but I have never seen any breathing like this. It was as if his top 1/2 of the body was breathing and then the lower 1/2 of his body was breathing.
When he came too his eyes were like a frightened horse as if he did not know what was happening to him. He settled very quickly after some TLC but he is not right. Although my vet assures me he is not is pain.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?
I have now converted one of the couches in the lounge into a bed for me and have brought his quilt and comforter down to the lounge and will keep the terrace doors open for him all night so he has water and access to wee at all times. Fortunately we live in Spain so the temperature is quite warm at the moment - even at night - although Fireking seems to want the fire on all the time and is at this moment lying on his quilt with his comforter in front of the fire.
I feel as if this is the beginning of the end but just hope he slips away painlessly and is not alone when it happens. The vet has said it could happen at any time, with just like a flick of the fingers. Hubby and I are taking it in turns to go out so he is not alone as i could not bear the thought of him being frightened of anything happening when he is alone.
I am almost afraid of going to sleep myself in case it happens during the night and he cannot attract my attention which is why I am sleeping with Fireking downstairs and not upstairs with Hubby,
Please let me know if anyone has encountered anything such as this and what the best method of help I can now give him as I am running out of ideas.
The vets in Spain are quite clinical - although very sentimental - and they have the attitude that what will be will be but I cannot accept this.
I need to know what is best for my beloved and hope I am doing the right thing.
Frankie Fireking

Sorry to hear he's fading on you. Have you considered having him put to sleep? At least then when it's time you can hold him as he passes. If its only a matter of when it might be worth considering.

I'm so sorry that we can't be there to help you go thru this. You are in our thoughts & prayers.

Thanks for your support. He is comfortable and asleep at the moment.
I cannot put him to sleep unless he is in pain and I am assured he is not.
It is me that has the bags under the eyes not him.
When he is on good days how could I consider that when he is just a bit incontinent.
You do not put humans down just cos they cannot control their urine output and I will not put Fireking out just cos I spend most of my time clearing up after him.
I assure you that it is not for selfish reasons that I am keeping him alive.
When he is on a good day he is like a 2 year old puppy and I cannot deprive him of those days however tired I am looking after him.
He is my treasure and every moment I spend with him even if i am mopping the floors I do not care - He will live every happy moment he can and I hope you understand that this is for him and not for me.

lGeess I hope for a miracle it can happen. You will have to make the decision when it comes, I have had to do this and I wish you the very best with least pain as it is as hard of us and the dog. I hate to let go also, I cannot blame you. Take care of both of you now and keep us posted.

I am so sorry to hear that things have developed for the worst again. I have no advice to give as you are doing exactly what I would do. I will pray for the best for you and fireking. Although as much as you love him and want him around, are you sure fireking is happy with this as his way of life? I am not saying anything against how you are taking care of him as I would do the same as you and am sure you are making him as comfortable as possible, just wanted to throw another thought in there.

Fireking had a comfortable night in the lounge with free access to the outside, and his quilt and comforter. He is playing with his tennis balls as we speak and again just like a puppy. As someone has previosly said it is like being on a rollercoaster.
Thanks for all your support, Much needed and appreciated.
