my dog hates me

I have a siberian husky, 10 years old. I grew up with her and now she hates me.

Recently she stopped letting me pet her. I used to always hug or pet her, but now whenever I touch her she has a physical reaction to get away. She just doesn't let me.

These actions coincided with me taking her out on long walks --- something she LOVES to do. She never used to do this, but now I take her.

In the mornings now she's uneasy and barks to go outside (she hangs out in the yard often). Yet 10 seconds after she goes outside she barks to come back inside.

Do dogs maybe have teenage-kinda years where they get sick and intolerant of people that annoy them? Is it possible thre is something going on?

I've never harmed her, so it's not like she's remembering me doing something bad to her. She DOES let other people pet her, and she lets me pet her when she wants food from me, but in recreation she has that shuddering reaction.

Also she never reacted to me how she reacts to parents... Her ears go back and she wags her tail and her skin gets soft... But to me she's just like "Ugh." Maybe I'm like the annoying brother? Even though we used to play a lot and hug.

My parents say it's just a phase, but I have a hard time believing this.

Hi welcome to the forum. It's been my experience that older dogs sort of slow down and become a bit tempermental in their old age. Have you taken her to the vet to rule out any health problems?

I think Salem hit it on the head. Dogs do get less tolerant as they age. They get achs & pains which can make physical contact uncomfortable. You should be very gentle and no big hugs anymore.

Older dogs also tend to "do their business than back to bed" so that might explain the behavior to go out then want back in.

Your vet can help you care for her so she is more comfortable in her old age.

It's just sad that suddenly she became like this seemingly overnight.

I hate not being able to hug her because I love doing that. When I see her my reaction is to grab that big fuzz ball and play.

I guess I'll just continue to take her out on her long walks because she enjoys that, and get used to not making physical contact w/her. It gets to the point where even if I touch her she'll lash out and bark.

Then I get offended and want to cry.

I feel bad for her now

You really should take her to your vet. She might be in pain. If so, you will notice that once she gets treatment, she'll enjoy getting pets again.

He could be in pain or he could be getting a bit of the old canine senility.

Jake is 10 now and somedays we wonder if he is a bit doolalleytap.

I also think you should absolutly go to the vet. She might be in pain. I just lost my Husky to spine cancer and he would yelp sometime when I would go to hug him. Please take your dog to the vet. If something is wrong hopefully you can take care of it before it gets worse. My baby was just 7 years old. Also, I do not think your dog hates you.

As the dog gets older their tolerance to things get less! My Mom has a 13 year old Lab. He use to let us put babies on his back. Now, when you come near him he barks and we say he's bitching.

10 years old is really getting up there for a larger breed. I would definitely go to the vet and see if something is hurting physically - internally.

Well I am wondering how old you are? Have you been away lately? Going out more often? Being away at school? Maybe she is upset with you because you are not around so much? If this is not it, I would also take her to the vet although you say she is fine with others petting her? She might see your parents as the leaders of the pack and you as an equal. that is why the attitude difference... hang in there...It is hard watching your loved ones get older.
