If you want to give her some very good reasons not to breed her female, tell her to visit a humane society or pound. Tell her to research the cost involved in whelping a litter, even if everything goes as planned. Not mention if there are complications. There are genetic disorders in every breed. Has she had her b**** tested? Has she picked out a stud that will compliment her dog's conformation? Has the stud been tested for genetic disorders? What kind of market is there for the breed of dog she has? Are those pups going to go unwanted and fill our humane societies? There is so much more to having a litter than just play with cute little puppies. Do your best to talk her out of it, it is about all you can do. Bottom line, we don't need any more dogs than there already are. Especially if they are not top quality bred.

Ok good reasons not to breed.
1) if her dog has been sold as a pet it probably isnt breeding quality 2) a really good stud dog will have a very expensive fee and using anything other than a really good one is more of a risk than its worth 3) there are already hundreds of thousands of unwanted dogs out there - why add to them 4) puppies cost a lot of money to raise 5) there is a risk with every pregnancy and she might lose her dog altogether 6) you need to have at least some experience before you breed a litter, she should do her research by working for a breeder for a few years first so she knows what to expect and how to deal with problems, otherwise the puppies only suffer, its more complicated than most people think. Hope that helps Lou |

Also she may think dogs have been having pups for years in the wild, you can throw back yes, but things have changed, our domestic dogs are not the same, and dogs in the wild die too from having pups just like our domestic ones.
To feed my pups for 5 weeks that is the norm for weaning, the cost alone was staggering, around $300 if not more. plus vaccinations, plus the whelping box with heating, cost of heating etc. Time, and the mess they make especially at around 4 weeks onwards, yes you do have to clean up their pee and poop, mum doesn't do it. Plus the strain on the dog, there are many things she can get, like milk fever, mastatis, her teats will droop and never return quite to the same as before. Dogs having puppies actually reduces their life span too. When she is having them you get all this black and green gunk comming out (afterbirth) it stains everywhere, and she EATS it, has your friend got a stong stomach. and on and on and on, want anymore, just write back in.... Do your best...but put her off. |
