Olive oil ok?

Would anyone know of any disadvantages in giving 1t olive oil daily? I heard they do wonders for the coat of our pups so I've started giving my shih tzu and pug 1t daily...is that healthy? Would you know of any other advantages it might have aside from improving the coat? My pug sheds ALOT so I was hoping this might help. Am i wrong?

A teaspoon a day shouldnt do any harm. Dont give it to puppies as it can cause them tummy upsets and dont give too much as it will soften the feaces sometimes to the point of diarrheoa. Oils are also a wieght gain aid so i would be wary of giving it to your pug as they are very prone to being too fat. A dog in perfect condition you can easily feel but not see their ribs (some breeds, e.g. greyhounds, it is appropriate to be able to see the outline of a few ribs) There is some evidence that cod liver oil helps keep joints healthy but i am not sure if the same is true of olive oil.

Olive oil has omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. Its one of the few natural sources of it.

It is also a monounsaturated fat - thats the good kind.

There are all sorts of benefits. Skin, Coat, Antioxidant etc etc.

I like to put some on my dogs nose when it gets dirty so he licks it clean and i dont have to wash it... (doggie show grooming secret )

Yeah, it does. I give my dogs Oliver oil too. It is very good for their skin and coat. I give my dogs cod liver oil pills in winter, cause winter has less sunshine.

Lou, youre right....my pug started to have loose stool due to the oil. So does that mean I should stop him on it or would his loose stool get better as the days go by and stomach gets used to the oil?

You can reduce the amount & given every other day. Does he have dry skin? They make supplements that contain some oils without the side affects - you might want to look into.

Just give him less as Dax said a couple of doses weekly should still be enough to give his coat some benefit. I also agree you may wish to look into other coat supplements if the loose stool continues on a lower dose. If you use cod liver oil a few drop from a pipette every day is sufficient to give the dog some benefit. We only use a desert spoon full for our horses so a few drops should be plenty for a tiny pug.
