Save some $ on Heartworm Prevention

So this isn't for everyone, and if your doctor will do it.

IF.. you do not own a collie type breed (as Dr. Miller says, "white feet, don't treat").. you can use injectable ivermectin orally.

Yesterday I went with my mom to work for her appointment and asked specifically for this. Usually at our hospital we'll prescribe it if the patient has food allergies. Both Heartgard Plus and Interceptor have beef products in it, since they are flavored tabs.

For her 115 lb Shepherd, the dose came to 0.03 ml (with a 1% ivermectin, or 10 mg/ml)! Which is literally drops of ivermectin per month.

She ended up paying $3.45 per dog for their 6 mos. supply (so basically 7.00 TOTAL).

If she had gone with either Interceptor or Heartgard Plus --and she would have had to gotten the 51-100 lbs, and then the difference for her monster GSD's. It would have been roughly $70.00/dog.. or 140.00 total for a 6 month supply for the both of them.

So just a tip... play the allergy card, and see if you can save money.. ONLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A COLLIE BREED.

NO jake cannot have ivermectin.

And yes, your veterinary office should carry this. It's also used to treat mites, and other parasites. Used as an injectable or as an oral med.

How come none of my vets offices have ever said that he shouldn;t have it - he has been taking it for 9 years or so - he even took it when we were in Coloroado and there are hardle any mozzies.

Any collie derivitive shouldn't have ivermectin. Including Border Collie, Sheltie, sometimes Australian Shepherd, etc.
