Sick Puppy

Hi everyone-didn't think I'd be posting here so soon. I've had my rescued pupppy Maia since last Thursday, and today when I got home and went to feed her, she didn't run around like norman, and didn't want any of her food. She usually inhales it. Upon examining her, I saw that she has a runny nose and was coughing like she was congested. Well this brought back all the things I just went through with Sam, and I am a wreck. I got an appointment right away with the vet, and he said that he thinks she has kennel cough and gave me Clavamox to give her twice. She's so little and I'm so scared that something is going to happen to her-I couldn't take it. The vet assured me that she should be fine, but then cautioned me to bring her in if she doesn't improve. I'm not familiar with kennel cough at all-Sam was sick only 2x in his life-a spider bite and the lung cancer. When I hear her gagging and coughing I am going crazy. Could you give me information on this, and if you think she will be able to recover from it-she had her new puppy checkup on Sat. and was in perfect health, so I don't know how she could have gotten so sick. Thanks for your help. Kathy

kennel cough is very common and easy to treat. (at least in my experience it has been) Trust your vet, keep your eyes on your dog, be calm, and I am sure she will be just fine.

The one thing I would do, is make sure your dog is getting enough water. When bernice was sick I took a pastry syringe and hand fed her water to make sure she did not dehydrate.

Thanks for the encouragement-I guesss I'm going to be overprotective of her until she is older (she's about 9 weeks) and can fight off infections easier. Kathy

Sorry you and Maia are going through this, Kathy. She's gonna be fine but I know it's scary for you after losing your Sam. Let us know how she is tomorrow.

Hi everyone-today Maia doesn't seem to be any worse. She still has the runny nose and cough and a little yellow gunk coming out of her eyes, but she ate her breakfast and dinner today, and was playing outside in the yard and in the house. Hopefully she'll get rid of this thing soon-I'm so worried about her. Thanks for all your help. I know anything with her is going to make me crazy-I hope I don't make all of you crazy with my questions, etc. I'm so glad I found this site. God bless all of you and your puppies!

Kathy, after your recent loss of your dear Sam it is only natural to be upset, but like others have said follow the vets instructions and don't hesitate to call them if there is a change. So glad to hear she is out playing and eating which is a wonderful sign. Hope all continues to improve and we're so glad to have you here on ProDog.

Wow, you sounded so upset yesterday, I didn't know who was in worse shape, you or your pup. I'm so happy that she's getting well, now you can get some rest and relax. Just keep your pup quiet for a while so she continues to improve. Tomorrow she'll be evn better yet .
