Over vaccination - confused/need help

I've been reading quite a bit lately on the dangers of over vaccination and how you should get a titers test first to see if the current vaccination is still working.

So, today I was at the vet for Bogey and when we were done she mentioned that Cali needs all her annual shots. I told her about what I've been reading, etc. and that I had some concerns. I told her many leading vet schools no longer reco annual vacs w/o titers.

She said she still feels it's too risky not to give them annually, that any boarding facility will require it as well as their grooming salon. I asked about titers and she said they're more expensive than all the shots combined. I said it's not about the money.

She said if I was interested in that I should find another vet because regardless of the titers results, she's going to want annual vacs.

What do you guys/gals in the know think?

I'm going to be leaving for Italy soon on business and will be gone several weeks. So, I just don't have time to look for another vet right now, especially with Bogey being so sick. But, when I get back I could possibly make a change.

The shots are due now. Can I wait until I get back? Should I go to a holistic vet?

Confused again!

I would find another vet, she is not up to date on the newest findings regarding over-vaccination. It can do more harm then good.

As a matter of fact, I am postive that Ruyd is hypo thyrion because of over vaccination.

I am lucky my vet understands the harm that can and does come from it.

Ok I wouldn't tell the vet off or anything that is for sure. This is the vets opinion.

However I know there are lots of studies going on with this. Dr. Jean Dodds is one of the leading vets over this. she is also doing studys on the rabies shots. She has also done studies on the agression and Thyroid link.

Very neat lady so I hear. Very very respected vet. You can send bloodwork to her from anywhere.

yes DR Jean Dodds is very studied in this her site is a wealth of information! I would find another vet if this is the route you wish to look into I warn you it is difficult one to follow. If you are going to board your dog while abroad more than likly you will run into problems on this too if his shots are due. Many people are resisting this prooven information.

I'd like to cut back on Mara's vaccinations but I travel into the USA quite often and it's required for that.

Why is it a difficult route to follow? Is it because it's hard to find vets who'll do the test and follow it?

The bordetella shot would kill Crystal at her age so I couldn't board her and never would but I have chosen to vac. every other yr. and my vet is going
along with it.

I've been aware of the dangers shots are presenting for yrs.Even the vet I worked for was aware, but she still gave yearly shots, except on my dogs. I stopped vaccinating yrs ago. My dogs got their full puppy shots and that's it. The only reason I get the rabies is because it's mandatory by law. When we moved our dog wasn't know in the area and he got no shots for the last 8 yrs of his life and was very healthy. My horse got a rabies shot, reacted to it and foundered real bad, we had to have him put down. I now don't give any shots to my other horses and no one bothers me, not even rabies, and we are out in the country.I do believe in getting titers done, but no vet does that here, so I just don't bother. Dog vet not too happy, horse vet doesn't mind, I think she also knows the dangers. I'm done with spending money to put **** in my dogs and horses just so they can get sick from them. Does anyone bring their kids in once a year for annual shots? so why should it be different for animals that are supervised and well cared for? As a matter of fact more and more people are NOT getting their kids immunized ever.

This is why when I get back from Italy I'm going to start interviewing holistic vets to see what is their take on this issue.

I read an article today that said if vets start to embrace the facts about overvaccination, many vets would go out of business because it would be such a "hit" to their bottom line. In other words, it's not really in their best interest to embrace it and it really comes down to integrity.

The author, a vet himself, said maybe that would force vets to be set up like human hospitals, like he feels they should have been from the go. Then instead of vet clinics everywhere with inflated prices, you'd have alot fewer, but much larger 24/7, vet hospitals where the vets would be employed. All specialties could be under one roof, like human hospitals.

Because of the synergy prices could go down. He admits this isn't going to happen tomorrow, but feels confident that's where the vet industry is headed. Interesting.
