Hi to all of you who have been following Fireking's progress.
He is still very lively and have just got another 10 kilos of food much to Paco's (my vet) surprise. He always tries to sell me just 3 kilos as if he thinks I am wasting my money but I try to have a positive attitude. The vets in Spain are not at all greedy and wont let you spend money unecessarily. However I digress. The vet warned me that as part of the condition - Chronic Kidney Disease - Fireking would become confused, As you know he cannot retain water so everything he drinks just passes straight through him and he has no longer any control over that, which is why i moved into the lounge so we could keep the outside doors open all night so he could drink and urinate whenever he wished. BUT he also does his other necessities there as well. Not a problem. I have just become a full time cleaner but I do not care about that. The problem is I think he is now in the confused state because he urinates without problem in the designated area but seems to think that the lounge is the area for his no 2's. I have stopped him twice as I just happened to be in the right place at the right time but he has now fouled the lounge three times. Do you think this is the start of the confused process? Has anyone else had this happen? I do not want to ask Paco as he would take him in for more tests and Fireking gets very stressed with those and I do not want to put him through the tests unless this is the beginning of the end. Please advise if you know anything. Many thanks Best regards Frankie and Fireking. |

Have you been able to do any internet research on what type things you might see if the confusion phase begins? I would think your vet should tell you what to be looking for.
My intuition tells me there would be multiple ways you would pick up on the confusion phase - the pottying in the wrong area might be one data point. I would think you'd need multiple and varied data points. This is strictly opinion. |

Fireking strange happenings
Hi to you all and thanks for responding.
Fireking has has a really good day and no fouling at all in the house. As some of you know hubby and i do a shift system so he is not left alone. However as I am looking for a job on a Thursday evening I go to the bar and collect the papers that advertise sits vacant. So I was late getting home tonight and was not looking forward to what I might expect. However Fireking has complete freedom of the house which is on 4 levels and not a wee or no 2's to be found. Mind you he was really pleased to see me and then went onto terrace and did what was necessary in the designated place so I only had to clear up outside and not inside. No disinfectant smell for me tonight as I sleep in the lounge with him so he has access to the outside. (not ideal for marital relations but david is completely supportive in my decisions) he has been such a good boy tonight. Fireking not David!!! So I think that I shall continue to follow my gut instincts as to when the time is right to lose him Thanks for your support as always. I'm glad Fireking is having a better day!!
Maybe he just thought that if he had peed in the lounge with no severe conciquesces that a poop would be tolerated too. Wasn't David a good boy too!!! LOL!! |

I'm so glad that Fireking is holding his own. You and your husband are so good to him and I'm sure that has a lot to do with his will to live. Hugs and prayers are coming from all of us-Kathy, Sam(at the Rainbow Bridge) and Maia.

Great news Frankie.....so happy for you and Fireking. The confused state is part of the kidney disease, eventually they seem to lose control, become confused as the other organs get affected. He seems to be in a peaceful mode, so I think he's still clinging. You could watch for seizures(it doesn't always happen) but lots of cases do. I think the way you are caring for him is wonderful, these are precious moments for both of you. Good luck for many tomorrows.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement.
Mara - I had not thought about the idea that as I do not tell him off if he has a no 1 accident that he thought that no 2 would be acceptable also. Pung-Yo - I thought the confusion was a stage in the process as Paco the vet had told me this but he never mentioned seizures. David or I are with him all the time so we are constantly watching him but am not sure what I should do if he had a seizure? He would be too big for me to carry him to the car to take to the vets so is a seizure just like a fit which will pass? Thanks again to all Frankie and Fireking |

yes, it passes, they are a bit confused after but they get back to normal, don't forget I said not every dog has them, hopefully yours won't.He will lose contol of bowels and bladder, but that's cleanable. There are meds for this, but in his serious condition I don't know if the vet would consider worth giving anything....he might only have a few (or none-is what I'm hoping for). You don't have to rush him to vet's when it's over, unless he doesn't come out of it. mention it to your vet next visit, see what he thinks. He knows all the details and might not think it's something to worry about. I'll keep praying for you guys, and hope everything remains stable for a long while yet.
