Parvo question

Hi Everyone~ My SIL just got a new puppy 5 days ago. After getting the puppy she stopped by our house to show him off. Our 2 1/2 yr old Rottie played with the puppy for 1/2 hour or so. Yesterday she called me to tell me that the puppy is very sick with Parvo. My dog is up to date on shots, he was last vaccinated in March. My vet said he should be fine.

My question is could the virus be in my home, even though the puppy never pee, pooped or vomited in my home or outside of it?? I'm asking because we have been looking to get a new Rottweiler pup and I know that Rottie are more susceptible to parvo.

I feel really bad for my SIL, she just lost her dog to cancer Easter morning and now this. I hope the puppy makes it.

Yes the Parvo virus can be in your home. It could have been carried in on the shoes of your SIL or puppies paws. Even if your dog is fine, he can still be infected but his own system will fight off the virus.

If you are planning on bringing in a new puppy, I would set up "safe" areas. Rooms that have been washed down with a bleach & water solution. Set up a puppy potty pen that can be sterilized with bleach & water. It would only be for the first couple of months that you have the puppy but better safe than sorry.

Being that your dog is vaccinated it's created antibodies to resist the virus. Your dog should be fine.

Just to be clear.. what's a "SIL"?

Thank you, thats what I thought. Now I'm not sure that I even want to chance getting a puppy. We have hard wood floors and washing them down with bleach is no problem but we also have area rugs that can not be bleached. Thanks again.

An older puppy (like about 6 months) with all thier shots would be fine to bring in. It's only the babies that I would worry about.

We really need to have a puppy-puppy, 8 weeks old or so. See, I have a in home daycare. I don't want to take any chances with other peoples children. Our 2 1/2 yr old Rottie was raised with all the kids and loves them, he is very gentle with the little ones. But we've had him since he was 8 weeks old. An older puppy would make me a little uncomfortable.

Before I gotten Angel her breeder was taking her to the vets office to get her final shots. In the mean time she found a stray Beagle puppy and brought Angel and the puppy with her to the shelter. The next day or so my breeder called..the puppy that was playing with Angel had Parvo and had infected a couple other dogs. I called my vet and since she was vacinated he told me to keep watch for any signs. Then about a week later to come in for her to get a second booster. Thankfully she was fine
