Question Microchipping?

My last question - I promise (for this week at least!). I'm taking Poppy to the vets tomorrow to get her second round of jabs done. Should I get her microchipped at the same time? They do recommend it and at last week's Puppy Party we were told that dogs are being stolen to order in our area so we should get them microchipped.

I'm just not sure what to do - the cat isn't chipped, and I've heard that it does actually hurt them when they insert it. It just surprises me that you can get it done by the vet, the local dog warden or even our local Trophy Pet Foods franchisee!

Has anyone else got any advice/experience on this subject?

My dog, was chipped by the vet. The breed has some very strict security lines, and most breeders chip them all at birth. His is embedded in his back. Kirby has ever aspect of security upon him though, microchipped, tatooed, licensed, SPCA SOSed, rabies vacc tags, etc, etc... not that he needs it all...

We had Roslynd microchipped while she was under for her spay. I would highly recommend having this done for many reasons. Not the least of which is the one you have described: pets be stolen (or even running off...). How are you going to describe your pet to the proper authorities? Though she is unique to you and your family, really all you can tell them is that she is a yellow lab.. like thousands of others in this country. Chipping stores all your information in the dog FOREVER! Each shelter in the US is equipped with a scanner and every animal that comes in is scanned... and owners contacted if chipped. I also believe many vets are acquiring this technology.

I don't believe that chipping is much more painful than a regular shot, but my vet, though the needle used is larger. If your dog has yet to be spayed, schedule the microchipping for the same time as the spay... it wil be eaiser for everyone involved (including the vet)!!

Good Luck! And, what is your puppy's name??

I would go for it. anything to be able to get your pet back if it gets lost. i'm sure it's not comfortable to begin with, it is a foreign object, but i'm sure that once it heals they wont think twice about it. keep tags on her too though, it's getting more prevalent, but still not everyone knows to check for a chip.

Bailey was chipped before i got her. i'm told it's the size of a grain of rice, and i forget exactly where, back of the neck or between the shoulderblades. i've got no evidence that it bothers her at all, but it's been in there a long time by now. of course, the tag with her phone number on it as well. and i took her to the vet in may to have a scary lump removed from her neck (which turned out to be nothing more than an infected sliver, yay!), they gave her a free tattoo as well since they had her under anesthetic already. shouldnt have to worry about losing this dog.

Microchipping is a very good idea. It isnt significantly more painful than an ordinary subcutaneous injection and any pain there is, is momentary. One day it may be your only chance of getting your dog back, then you'll be glad you did it.

I never had Max chipped but always wished that I had when he was younger - just for peace of mind. Chipping is easily done (hence, you can get it done at so many different places other than a vet's office) since int doesn't involve more than a simple injection in the back of your dog's neck. Accordingly, it is not a painful procedure.

Normally a local anaesthetic is given at the site, or the procedure is done whilst the dog is having another operation. It is painful, upon insertion, normally at the back of the neck. Afterwards the dog doesn't even know it is there.
I highly recommend it.

OK I got Poppy chipped today. When I went for her jabs I asked to see how big the needle was that they used for the microchip and asked the vets opinion (now or when I get her spayed in December). It was slightly bigger than the one they use for jabs so I went for it.

Poppy didn't even bat an eyelid - and the good thing is they will never have to put a thermometer up her you know what as the chip has a built in thermometer!!

LOL cool they are developing new things all the time. And here's me thinking the vet school is supposed to keep its students up-to-date.

Wow. Do all microchips come with a built in thermometer or did you ask for it specifically?
