Colitis

Hello everyone, I was just looking for some help for my mother's Italian Greyhound. She has had colitis before and we kept her on a bland diet, is there anything else we can do? She isn't eating much at all. Has anyone else had much experience with this problem, and if so, what would you recommend to make the dog more comfortable? Thanks for any replies!

what we did is put them on the bland diet of rice and cottage cheese. You could through in other stuff too. don't remember what. oh wait, yogurt is great too! help with the enzymes in the digestive track. Once the dogs have been on that for a while we then put them on a different food to see if that helped. It is hard to say what exactly is causing it in specific dogs.

good luck!

I also have on more question, I recently brought home a new puppy and he was introduced to the italian greyhound. He had his distemper/parvovirus shot at six weeks of age and he is now 9 weeks (he had a booster shot yesterday). How can you tell the difference between parvovirus and colitis as the symptoms are almost the same? I would feel awful if my new pup brought in parvo and gave it to my mom's dog. Now I am worried

The last time the IG had colitis we treated it as the vet suggested, and she got better. The symptoms showed up yesterday and we began treating it again (mild diet) the same way. I haven't spoken with the vet yet but I will tomorrow if she's not better.

I called the vet today and she said the colitis was probably brought on by stress. She suggested baby food, cottage cheese, and half a teaspoon of pepto bismal about 3 times a day. She said if it's not better by tomorrow or tuesday to bring her in.

siberian 1 - thanks for the suggestion, this is her second time with colitis so I'm thinking a better diet may help her.

Your vet won't mention the shots being the culprit but I tend to think it had something to do with it. When I had to detox my shepherd from rabies shot, my fox terrier showed symptoms also. It could be that your dog is prone to colitis for just any reason, I'm very leery of shots. anxious to see how everything turns out.Good luck.

Well we took her to the vet and the stool sample returned no parasites just alot of blood. She got a shot of antibiotics and stronger anti-diarrheal (sp?) medicine. She ate a little bit of food and is drinking so she should be better soon. I am just going to have to keep the puppy away from her until she's better as the vet believes he stressed her out. The hardest part will be when I'm at work, but my grandma agreed to puppysit. Well thanks again everyone for the suggestions and concerns. :-)
