German Shepherd itching

Hi. I'm new to the forum and am hoping to find some help with my Gretta. She is a 2 year old German Shepherd with an itch issue. She does quite a bit of scratching and I'm having difficulty discovering why. Sometimes just petting her will get that back leg started scratching. I have changed her diet a few times and she does seem better the Royal Cannin dog food which is formulated especially for a German Shepherds sensitive skin. Her coat is soft and shinny and she has no skin trauma. I use advantage as her flea treatment (I've never seen a flea on her but use it as a precaution anyway). She is a beautiful and wonderfully sweet companion and I'd like to help her out. It can't feel good to be itchy! Thanks for any help anyone can give us.

Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to her diet. Might just be dry skin.

Ohh, another Greta. I also know a GSD named Gerta. My Greta has had skin problems and I have given her Linatone by Lambert Kay. I absolutely love it. But I would have to assume that olive oil would be just as effective and much easier on the pocket book

Smile Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion of using Olive oil. It's certainly worth giving it a try. Thanks again.

Oh, by the way, my Gretta is spelled with two tt's. Our neighbors German Shepherds had pups 2 years ago. The papa is their 4th generation from this line. All nice dogs! Anyway, my Gretta's greatgrandmothers' name was spelled with 2 tt's so we decided to stay with that spelling. It's really been fun having Gretta's mom and dad right down the road. They love to "visit". Thanks again for your help.

Poor dog...I don't really have any suggestions...I have also heard that Corn oil does well but I have never tried it...My dog also has terrible skin and I have never thought it could be because he is part German Shepard

Crystal,
I'm a little hesitant to try corn oil as some dogs have corn allergies. I have a Golden Retriever/Irish Wolfhound who is very allergic to corn so I guess it makes me a bit nervous. So far Gretta is doing well with the Olive oil (no adverse reactions). If it works for the itching, I imagine it will take some time before we notice a change.
Thanks for your post.

If there is no apparent dry skin, or flea allergy on the coat are you sure it is skin related? Sounds a bit like a nerve thingy to me, if you walk your fingers across her back does her skin ripple?

I wasn't aware that dogs are allergic to corn. I have never tried the corn oil. I don't give him anything without checking. I hope your pup feels better
