3 year Rabies vaccine.. Rule change!!
Many states in the US require the rabies vaccine be given to dogs every 2 years, even though it is a 3 year vaccine. That may soon be changing in Maine!! Check out this link!!

Yay, but it's still important to have dogs checked annually or twice a year. That was the only benefit of having to vaccinate once a year is that it was more likely to get pets in for regular checkups. Now owners won't have that extra push to bring them in annually.

True, but good dog owners will be aware of this and will still bring their dogs in regularly... here in the Northeast we have to be concerned with lyme disease, for which there is an annual vaccination so many are in annually anyway,(plus for other boosters...).. though it is not required for licenses..

TX requires it be given every year... Which is awful.

I saw an article the other day that said that Texas is working on changing that because of complaints. I don't remember the website though or how old the article was. The debate on the otherside argued that rabies was more common or more of a threat in Texas because of the number of wildlife.

that article says that that dog got cancer because of getting that shot after 2 years. does that happen often? or is that just coincidence??

The thing that spurred the debate/controversy in Maine was a family whose yellow lab developed cancer after the rabies shot. They did research and found that this is not uncommon when the vaccine is given every year or two instead of three.
Heartsong: No doubt that rabies is more common in areas with a larger wildlife population, but having a vaccination every year or two instead of the needed/recommended three does not give an animal more protection against the disease.... so, what's the point?? It's hard to believe the government knows better than our vets what the vaccination schedule for our animals should be!! |

We don't have to get rabies jabs done here in the UK. However, if we want to travel with your dog under the PETS travel scheme (allows you to go to certain countries, on certain routes and come back without have to have the dog in quarantine for 6 months) then you have to get the rabies done (along with blood tests and other stuff and tick treatment 24-48 hours before you return). I'm glad we don't have to get them done if this is what can happen.

So then what happens if you get it two years in a row?
I had Bailey's records in storage and couldnt get to them to tell the vet when I had her in in the spring. I figured better safe than sorry, especially since you dont know who's dogs have been vaccinated and you know the coyotes haven't. Turns out she had the 3 year shot twice in a row. |
