Dewclaws and 1st shots

at what age should dewclaws be removed from the hind legs of a Chesapeake puppy? Is it something that is done at the vets office? and how soon do you get the puppies their first shots.

Dew claws should be removed when they are very young, before 5 days I believe is the correct age but can't remember exactly. And yes get it done at your vets office. Or if you leave it until later they can be removed when the dog is getting spayed or neutered, but imo it is best to get it done when they are very young instead.

I don't give the first shots until about 7 weeks, ask your vet what they recommend.

I was taking a look at the puppies tonight and I don't see any dewclaws on their hind legs, I do see them on the front legs, is this normal?

Yes, that is normal. How old are the pups? Are you getting the front ones removed?

Derf, not every dog has dew claws on their back legs. In the UK we give first puppy shots at 8 weeks, then the next one at 10 weeks and then they can go out a week after that.

Do you have puppy pictures for us

The longer you wait to remove dewclaws the more pain it causes. They can be removed at a few days of age pretty simply, but if you wait til the pups are older and bigger, it becomes a surgical procedure....and depending on whether or not the dewclaw is a "loose" dewclaw or "attached" it could be a pretty invasive surgery requiring some pretty painful recovery....

I'd get it done at a few days of age.

Shadow face is right, the older the pups, the worse the pain, they heal quicker when they are young.
