The silent killer

My dog was just diagnosed with breast cancer ( mammory tumors) she is 11 yr old un spayed Dalmatian .. she has never been bred and I guess to my own ignorence I didn't know the risks of not spaying her .. I have had her since she was 13 weeks old , she sleeps in my bed every night , comes to the horses , everywhere with me .. I am feeling a bit guilty as this could have been prevented had I had her fixed before her first heat ..but no sence crying over spilled milk .. right ?

anyways ,I took her to my vet today for a pre surgery blood panel and X-rays to see if it has spread to her lungs , we don't think it has because the tumors are still pretty small and no coughing ect...Dr. said that he basically has to fillet her .. I'm a cook so I know exactly what he meant.. ) he will do a full historectomy , take out the tumors and removal of her mammory glands and milk lines ( forget the proper term for those )

has anyone had the same thing with there dog? I am fishin' for some positive here .. she is my baby , momma's suck .. I will do anything for her .. looking right now at the cost of $1000.00 I am a paychech to paycheck gal , I kinda knew this is what she has , I am only really concerned about all the pain ( I'm sure she will have some ) and all she is going to have to go through in the coming weeks ..

Thanks for listening ..

All I can say is hang in there. Elle (my English Bully) was diagnosed with kennel cough. That went to bronchitus which soon went around the corner to pnemonia (she was only ten weeks old AND a bulldog [bad respiration]!). We were sure she wouldn't make it.. she losing weight- and she had to stay at the vet's office for a good two weeks!! She was so unstable and she had a broken up cough that was all mucousy. I mean, it didn't look good. The vet even had to put her on a medication not suitable for puppies her age. He said that it was her last chance.

And guess what? She pulled through! Now, you would never know that she had anything wrong. All I can tell you is to hold on, hold on, hold on, unless it's better for her not to suffer.

But for now, put in a good, strong, fight.

Maybe your vet would work out a payment plan for you.
I'm sorry your going through this.

This is VERY common in intact older females.

The surgery is a bit more trauma than typical, because of taking wide margins to make sure the cancer is removed. They also typically spay during this time.

It's really your best option. Besides spreading to other internal organs, when it gets too large to surgically remove and have no outer layer of skin to connect (basically plastic surgery) it's very hard. Then you get to the point of no return.

I'd look into Care Credit if finances are an issue.

Hi. Iam not really new to the forum, as I have posted a few times. But I never really introduced myself before, so hello from me. I have 7 cockers all of who are finished show dogs. I also have 3 cats. I have my own pet grooming business in Pa. This thread really caught my eye beacuse I have actually had the same experience with my one cocker 4 years ago. I rescued 4 of my cockers from a friend who was a breeder and handler, when she passed from cancer. one of my rescues Aimee, was diagnosed with mamory cancer, she had an inscision from her first teet clear down to her private. Luckily it had not spread any further, and today 4 years later and now 12 years old she is wonderful. So don't fret too much, if caught in time, she can lead a normal life.. good luck and God Bless....

Does happy dance !!!! Kayla's chest X-ray has come back clear and her blood panel good .. so she is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday.. YaYY I am sad for my dog that she is going to have to endure some pain but at least now there is a good chance of her being with me for a few more years .. my vet even called me on a SUNDAY to tell me .. ( I love him )
