I Think My Pup May have a Spider Bite?

While I was giving Skootie a once over last night I noticed a lump on his back leg. It is about the size of a dime. I told my boyfriend to check it out and he thought "tumor" The area is kind of red in the middle, kinda like a bite. We get some pretty big spiders in here sometimes (we live in a basement suite) and Skoots likes to sleep under the bed. Anyone every had a spiderbite on a dog before? I am going to keep checking it all week. If the lump starts going down, I assume it is a bite. Any info would be fabulous

Have a great weekend everyone!

I don't have any experience of spider bites I'm afraid but my first thought would be to give Benadryl to see if the swelling goes down, if it is a bite the Benadryl should help. If it isn't then the Benadryl shouldn't hurt.

You need to keep an eye on it and see what happens but I know you're doing that already

I think Lilly got bitten by a spider and Brooke had to get her to the vets for treatment, but I could be wrong.

When spiders bite, they usually bite a lot of times around the same place. I once woke up with about 15 spider bites along the inside of my thigh, boy was that painful.

Benadryl is a good idea.

What about a bee or wasp sting ? That can cause that type of swelling as well.

He was in the yard yesterday for abit, but it doesn't look like one. I've been bitten by a wasp and a spider and the bite feels kinda spiderish. I did catch him chewing something in the hallway the other night. I said "What are you eating?" and he spit out this giant red spider! I had to get my fiance to kill the spider.....I'm totally creeped out by them! Maybe it bit him and he tried to eat it? The swelling seems a tiny bit better today, still pinkish. I will try some Benadryl perhaps. How much would you give a 9 pound dog?

Thanks for the info!

OMG Moo! I would have freaked out! I had a nasty bite on my leg a couple months ago. Just one but it was huge!

You would not give very much.

Lets see, our dogs are 80 pounds and that would be a childs dose, so less then 10% of a childs dose. Does that help ?

The only spiders we have that are huge are dock spiders that hang out under docks. So if we go to cottage and want to swim we walk loudly and they take off under the cracks, about as big as an egg and they can sure swim, once someone is in water we don't see them again.I don't miss the swimming at all, but our dogs were never once bitten. I've never seen a red spider before, what kind are they?

When Lilly got bitten it came up as a huge lump too. She had an allergic reaction, so she had to stay overnight at the vets. They gave her an injection to stop the swelling and an antibiotic steroid injection as well. She also had some pills for about a week, but I can't remember what they were called.

It doesn't sound like Skootie would be having an allergic reaction though. Benadryl should help, I think I was told to give 1/2 mg per pound, but I could be wrong about that.

I hope he's fine and it gets better soon!

I figured it out! It isn't a spiderbite. When my pups went to the vet a couple weeks ago, Skootie got one of his shots in his back leg. It must be all swollen in there. It doesn't seem to hurt at all, just a nice sized lump. Sorry about the spiderbite thing, I totally forgot and didn't think he would have reacted to the shot that way. Thanks for all the great info, I will remember Benadryl any time he gets a bite. All the best everyone!
