Fatty Tumor
Greta had a fatty tumor on her front leg just before she turned a year old. Now it seems like she has a new one developing. I remember witht the first one, the vet did an extraction and some lab work and said there was nothing to worry about. He gave me some Hydrocortisone for any itching and sent us home. It disappeared within a couple of weeks. I know that Labs are prone to fatty tumors and that most of them are harmless. Has anyone else dealt with reccurring fatty tumors? I am just wondering if I should have her checked by the vet again or just keep monitoring the growth. I first noticed it about a week ago. It has gotten larger (same as what happened the last time) and she is chewing it. If I vet wrap it she leaves it alone. Any advice?

Hi GretaJack. I'm the member who has the German Shepherd named Gretta (with 2 tt's)
I also have a Goldenretreiver/Irishwolfhound mix (Sidney-female) who developed a fatty tumor about a year ago. The vet did an extration of some fluid to be sure of her diagnosis and it was like looking at a clear oily substrance. It doesn't seem to bother her and has not grown. It also has not gone away or changed in any way. The vet told me at the time to watch it and bring her back in if it got larger or started to bother her. So, I guess, since it seems to be bothering your Greta, I'd have her checked again. That way you can either act or relax depending on your vets advice. Keep us posted.

My parents had a golden retriever/aussie shepherd who developed a fatty tumor on his front leg when he was about 4. They had it removed, it came back about a year later & had it removed again. His eventually came back as a cancerous tumor, but the vet didn't think that it would until it actually did, so I think that's not a common result.

Fatty Tumor
We changed our three dog to Nutro.."Natural Lamb & Rice Diet" and our collie
no longer has a body ordor. She had a cyst before and it hasn't come back on this new food. Their are many web sites on this subject..healingdaily.com essiac-info.org...by Jan Hodges on pets which has a dog forum. Good luck with your pet. Take Care! |

Ummmm, my vet never said anything about how to make fatty tumors go away. She just said to not worry about it. It hasn't gone away and she has a couple other ones that are VERY small. You have to really get your hands in her fur to find them. They don't bother her at all but, now I'm wondering if maybe we should try to get them to heal up/go away.
chipdip: I'm going to check out those web sites.

Gosh, it was such a long time ago that she had her tumor. I wish I could have taken pictures. It wasn't serious by any means. It is just that she licks and bites them constantly unless I wrap it. Then she has the bandage to chew on instead.
