Update on Anka's ACL

First, thanks again to everyone for the support/advice about Anka's ACL Repair surgery. The vet said the surgery went perfectly, and that she was a perfect candidate for a near-full recovery. (He said the joint will never be as strong/healthy as the original.)

She has an incision that's about 5 inches long with 19 staples in it. They have to be removed 2 weeks after the surgery date. They shaved her all the way from her ankle up the side of her butt! They also shaved the area on her back that they placed the pain medication patch on. The patch is stitched on, that comes off tonight.

Everyone said she's be woozy the first couple of days, well NO, not our Anka!! She seemed to think she was good-as-new as soon as she got home. Luckily we've been able to keep her pretty calm, but she's gone down the steps a couple times when we weren't looking. The hardest thing is getting her to take her pills. She's very tricky at pretending to take them and then spitting them out. (Even when hidden in peanut butter or wet dog food!)

Glad the surgery went so well.......I guess this will be the hard part, keeping her quiet. some dogs never run out of gas do they. Good luck, keep her crated if you have to and keep us posted.

Glad everything went well. Sassy had hers done years ago and she's been great ever since. I've recently had the same pill problem with her. She's just had another cancer surgery and takes about 8 pills a day..which she hates! I now either smush them into a piece of velveeta cheese, or take a piece of meat, cut a slit in it and toss it to her. She gulps her food down fast so as soon as it hits her mouth, it's gone. I've even (with the vet's approval) had to cut some of them in half cos they'd come out of her the same way they went into her (Undigested). I've tried putting them in her mouth, holding it shut and massaging her throat and it doesn't work. If I try to give them to her in certain foods, she'll chew the food and spit the pill out. I realize that my cheese and/or meat method isn't good for her weight, but it's that or she doesn't take the meds. Whatever works!

Don't worry about the weight, she won't be on the meds for that long. and if she's as active as you say, she'll shed the extra in no time.
