Is it ever too late to spayed?

3 of my 4 dogs are spayed and neutered. I just had Cricket fixed last week. Zoey, my Lahsa Apso is 6 years old. She was my Mom's dog for awhile before she came to me when she was 2 years old. I read different things about there being more complications spaying an older dog, which is why I never spayed her. The more informed I become, the more I think the right thing to do is spay her. I don't plan on ever breeding her, I have never wanted to breed any dog. This would be for Zoey's benefit, I've read that spayed and neutered dogs have less health problems. I would also like to cut the risk of some random dog jumping the fence and impregnating her. I was wondering if there is any truth in the idea that fixing an older dog is dangerous for the dog.

I would consult your vet. he will know the dog's health much better than we do, and he could make a much more educated decision.

now that all dogs must be spayed before being adopted out of shelters they are spaying much, much older dogs, without a problem, quite often.

If she is in good health otherwise Id go ahead and have it done. As bernice said talk with your vet.

I think she is plenty young still to get spayed! The last dog I had was a rescue that I got, and she was 15 when they spayed her. She did fine! I'd have a presurgical blood screening done if you aren't certain of her organs.

A breeder I know always gets her dogs fixed once they have stoped breeding them - this is usually around 6 years of age. With all these things it's best to take your vets advice.
