heartworm meds / weight

just curious what other folks do when their dog is on the edge of a weight category.

Faith is around 50lbs. some days she's 49 (this morning) and some days she can be as much as 53 (after dinner at grandma's).

when it comes to her heartworm meds, the weight categories are 26-50, and then 51-100. i have been getting her the 26-50's simply because most days she is 50 pounds.

what does everyone else do who has a dog on the edge like that?

I have a dog on the edge, too. Chip's heartworm meds come in up to 25 pounds and 26-50. She's usually about 24.3 pounds but she fluctuates to 26 pounds. We give her up to 25 because when we went to the vet she weighed in at 24 and that's what she normally is. I wouldn't want her to get a dosage that's too high for her so for now we're sticking with the up to 25. She HAS been on 26-50lbs before but that was when she was a little chunkier at 28 lbs

for me it's an even bigger jump. i have a hard time giving the 51-100 lb dose when she weighs only 50 most days.

Faith I would keep her on the high dosage, that way you know for sure you are getting the correct amounts. If it is too little you will have an issue but with the higher dosage you should be fine with no ill helath effects.

Meka is on the edge also, she is 52-55 pounds. I buy the 51-100 pound.
In the winter months, I just give her 1/2 of one. Chance of getting heartworm in the winter is pretty slim. In the spring and summer I give her a full one.

thanks! i was a bit worried about that. i was thinking - i'd rather not have her get twice the dosage she needs if she only weighs 50lbs. but it's the teetering between 49 and 53 that i wondered about.
