Unhappy Need Rabies Info

Mom's dog may have been bit by a raccoon. The vet turned it into the health department because Jackie's Rabies shot is expired. She was told it's highly possible he can't get it. But that slight chance is there and they want to quarantine him. Unfortunately that costs 25 dollars a day for 10 days to 6 months which my mom can't afford. Her other option is surrendering Jackie to the humane society and they will euthanize him.

I need info on rabies... anything ya got.. and any legal info if you have it. This is ridiculous! We are not even sure if he got bit. Jackie ran under her feet after the raccoon and he had a little scratch on his lip.

Here is a site with some information

http://www.tahd.org/rabies.htm

There are bloods tests available to test for the disease - likely more expensive than 25/day.

See if they will allow your mom to isolate the dog at home. A kennel or other secure structure.

I think she already asked that. I'll see. One vet said he'd already be showing signs if he did have it.

I have heard the owner can have thier choice of vets to board at and some are only $8 a day, If you absalutely had to do it maybe find a lower cost vet clinic to board her at through the quarantine. I have never heard of a dog being kept longer than 10 days either. I hate that they are being so mean about it.

Yeah it seems excessive. Hopefully we can work something out. Even if I have to chip in a little bit to help her. I'd hate for them to have to surrender Jackie.

How old is the shot ??? When did the dog get it ?

Typically Rabies shots are good for three to five years, even though some vets say 1 year.

It's 3 yrs old. She was told it's good for 4 yrs. So I don't know. Different vets are saying conflicting things.
