there are lots of folks on this site who've got rescues - and, i agree, it's a great thing to be able to save a dog in need.

Love the eyes----yes I also agree, giving a dog a second chance at life is the greatest.

I am very active in rescue, and think its a great way to go. If you adopt from a good rescue they will ensure the dog is in perfect health and are able to match the right dog to your family and lifestyle.

IMO, there are too many good dogs out there who need a good home to try and buy from a breeder. Since I have no interest in conformation shows or breeding, I don't really have a need to buy from a breeder. And after my experience in adopting from a shelter (I ended up with a very sick puppy that we spent $1000 on vet bills and alomst had to put her down in the first week), I think that in the future I will only adopt from rescue organizations that foster their dogs. Good rescue organizations know the dogs they are adopting out. They know about any health or behavior issues. And they know about the breed and can give you good information.
This is not to say that there aren't plenty of great dogs in shelters, I just don't think I ever want to take that risk again. It turned out to be too expensive and too heart-rending.

Here the shelters give you a coupon for a free visit to vet to have dog checked out thoroughly and make arrangements for future shots, etc. If anything is found, you can take the dog back and let them deal with the problems.

Have only done it once and would not consider anything else. I went to three before making my final decision and quality of pets were really high at all of them and they seemed happy and healthy.

Be slow to choose and careful though. I like large dogs and they had some fantastic ones but I knew I wanted a small dog for inside. There are some good quizzes online about how often you want to groom, how much exercise, whether you live in apt., etc. that then make recommendations

scottishgal - i just had to edit your thread and put his picture up there - he is lovely. i also have to ask - is that your picture in your album???

i agree that there are lots of lovely dogs in rescue but there are some rescues who will rehome dogs that really shouldn't be rehomed my only gripe with a lot of them in the uk is that they won't rehome to people who work full time... but then you guys know all about my feelings on that!

the rescues do a wonderful job, if only more people would conisder getting dog from there it would make a big difference...

My Loki is a rescue. He's a wonderful dog - I love him to death!! He's everything I wanted in a Pyrenees! If you're rescuing a dog and not a puppy, you don't have to wait to see how they're going to look when they grow up too...

If you are going through a breed specific, make sure you know everything there is to know about the breed. If you're going for a mix/mutt - just make sure you take your time getting to know the dog. If you have a resident dog, arrange a meet n' greet.
