Red face housetraining problems

Ok so, I adopted this little chihuhua from a shelter back in June. She is a little over a 1 and 1/2yrs. She came from a very bad home, but I don't know exactly what happened to her. She is really good about going outside and relieving herself but every single night she goes on the floor, never fails. I keep her in her crate during the day while I am at work but I don't like to do that at night also, so I leave her out. We rent so I can't have her going on the floor all the time! Any thoughts?

Why don't you have her in the crate at night? Housebreaking works with repitition, She should be able to hold it for a 7-8 hour night. The crate is your friend.

Well, when you're asleep you're not playing with her or anything so the crate is still your best option for the time being anyway.

It doesn't mean for ever just for now. Leave her in for a month or two and then try leaving the door open. Training is always a series of steps. She'll catch on.

It's a misconception. Crates are not cruelty. The dog grows to love the crate, it is their personal space. I had mine crate trained and sleeping in his crate for months, and even when I opened the crate door at night, he still liked to sleep in the crate.
