Crying all night, Is this normal? Non stop.

I just got a puppy chihuahua and it was her first night home. I know they are supposed to cry and stop once they realize they are not going to get any attention. But is it normal for the puppy to cry all night and morning nonstop? My APBT cried but not that long just for the first two hours at most, But the Chihuahua cried more than 6 or 8 hours nonstop.

Yes it can be normal, we have a thread on this subject back in the archives. Do a search for Your New Puppy, what to get and expect on his arrival. It is early for me, 4am, I will search a little later for you and help more when I have woken a bit if you cant find anything.
Cheers. Ellierat.

Ellierat - what are you doing on at this time!!

When I got my puppy she didn't cry at all but we did have a piece of material that had been rubbed on her mum before we brought her home so we put that in the crate with her along with "Mr Pig" - a cuddly toy that was bigger than her!!

I have heard people putting hot water bottles in there along with a ticking clock to help. I don't know whether crying that long is normal but that's a couple of things for you to try...

A crying puppy is very normal. Some have more stamina than others. It will get better, it always does. Make sure your pup is good and tired before you turn him in for the night. It might help decrease his crying time since he has spent a lot of energy up already

Our pup cried the first night. She was in her crate and lonely. Hard to ignore, but we did. The second night I put an old sweatshirt of mine in with her and tucked a ticking wind up clock under one corner of it. That took care of it. I had heard that a ticking clock is similar to their mom's heart beat and they find it soothing. It sure worked for Sidney. Good luck!

We had to go the whole hog with Ell's...what a sooky labrador.
Warm bed, beside my bed, hot water bottle under my jumper, with a ticking clock and a teddy to cuddle up to.
She woke me a few times in the first week, I would just put my hand down and touch her, then she went straight back to sleep.
The hardest part was to get her out of my room and into the laundry when she got a little older...got sick of cleaning up her accidents all over the carpets.
I will admit it was easier than leaving her to cry as a little puppy all night long. She just whined for half an hour or so for a few nights, then got over it.

I have heard of several things that people have tried when they encountered the crying. One was to have an old-style alarm clock close to the puppy because the tic-toc is supposed to remind the pup of mummy's heartbeat. I've never tried it but perhaps it will work for you. When Max cried his first night (that night now seems several centuries ago), the only thing that calmed him down was to be in the same room as me - in fairly close proximity. Fifteen years later, he still doesn't leave my side...and he hasn't cried since.
