Parvo Question???

A friend of mine had a 3 month old black lab and it got Parvo. She took it to the vet right away and they started treatment and IV's, but her puppy still didnt pull through. She is now wanting another dog, but the vet told her you cant bring another puppy into that area for at least 6 months til the virus is gone since its so contagious. My question is, if she gets another puppy and has all its shots including Parvo shot before she brings it home, then is it ok, or do you still have to wait? And I know this is a puppy disease, so can older dogs not get this? So if she decided to get an older dog and not a puppy, would it be safe for her to go ahead and bring a dog into her home as long as it had its shots also and was not a puppy. Thanks for your help, she does not have internet, so I told her i would try to find out for her.

First of all, parvo is not a puppy disease. Older dogs can get it. Even if the shots are up to date, they can still get it. As for the 6 mos. waiting period, if your friend has everything sanitized , including the carpets if she has them she can bring a new dog in the home within the month. But even her shoes have to be sprayed with disinfectant. I guess this was an inside pup, so she has to go over everything the pup came in contact with. This is the clinic does things here, maybe if you live somewhere different , the virus lives longer? But this is a first for me.

No, when I had a lab pup,and he got parvo, we sanitized everything, threww shoes away, dog beds that they laid on, and my little dog sissy, still got a bout of parvo, but it wasn't as bad, since she had her shots, but she was quite ill. Listen to the vet, he knows what he is saying, not to hurt pung yo, but they can get it. Sissy came in the house, three monthes after jack had gotten it. NOOOOOOOOOOO Please don't get a new pup yet!!!!!!!

so what about a dog who is more than a year old, are they less apt to get this??? Or would you still recommend waiting...?

Well, now I'm wondering if the higher temps have anything to do with it. Salem did you have your house sanitized by a professional. We have a lot of customers that lose a pup from parvo and when they are finished with the house they bring a new pup home without a problem. Or a grown dog, whatever. Even during the course, the teachers never said anything about this and our clinic never heard of it either, I phoned the vet this afternoon to make sure I wasn't making a mistake, she said it was ridiculous. So maybe in the hotter parts of the country it's different. Only thing that could be the cause, this is simply not a problem we've seen here.
