NEW 2 Point parvo update

From Anne Jones in Atlanta
(Anne is the health contact for the Bichon Club of America - not sure if
she's a vet herself or not, but I don't think she is):

I have been reading about the newly discovered influenza virus in dogs
for several months now and it appears to me that the most significant
point to hold in one's mind is that, being a recent mutation, 100% of
canines are susceptible and this is the point that I made when I wrote
this up for our parent club Health Times. Therefore any dog with a
cough has to be suspect and should be essentially quarantined, though it
is quickly apparent that this will be closing the barn door, in effect.
Once the dog has developed symptoms, other dogs around him are going to
have been exposed. And the second important point is to be on the
lookout for extreme elevations of temp to indicate a possible secondary
infection. Beyond that, without a vaccine, there is not much to do but
maintain good health to support the immune system. Viral infections are
usually self limited.

I'm not for sure.. but i don't think this excerpt is about parvo. It's actually about the canine influenza.

The "cough" is what makes me think this. Parvovirus does not have a cough as a clinical sign.

The canine influenza is very new to the veterinary world, and is spreading very quickly. But, with any virus.. we don't know much. We know it mutates, but we can't make a vaccine quick enough to help because of the fast mutations and because of the time it takes to create one. Plus, who is to say that in 5-8 years dogs will build a resistance to this? Etc etc.

I have been wondering if the dog world isn't picking this up from the horse world, as in innoculating against the equine flu virus.

no it is about parvo 2, symptoms are very similar and often confused with canine flue. If you doubt it why don't you contact barb on the board of directors for GSD Health and betterment. you want her email? I know full well what I'm talking about.

Whoa.. no need to get huffy or anything. Your title was a bit confusing and there was no definitive name or description with your quoted section.

I'm not doubting anything... I work in medicine, I know anything is possible.. it's finding the answer that is sometimes difficult.

Anyhow.. I'll have to research this and find more information. Do you know how many diagnosed (and REALLY diagnosed) cases there have been? Is it treatable? Parvovirus can sometimes be treated, is it similiar treatment? How are they diagnosing this? Can you diagnose it like parvo with the snap test? Or will it show a false negative?

sorry weezy yesterday was a very bad bad day for me. BUT I'm happy again today. Sorry about the confusion, the info was in one of my emails and i took out the info that gave other peoples names and such I had thought I just put in the relevant points. as an update....the email goes on to name infected dogs and kennels and to post that...just wouldnt be fair to those involved.
