new puppy

We just purchased a 6 week old Chesapeak puppy yesterday. My other Chesapeak was about 4 months old when I got him. We Keep the new puppy in a little dog pen in the house at night. She stays up all night barking and doing the stuff that little puppies do when they are first separated from their mother. Anything I can do? Is she too young at this age to teach her not to bark? My Male Chesapeak barks non stop all day, and I want to teach the pup not to bark. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,
Derf

BARKING: Dogs left outside tend to bark more - probably because they see everything. You can try making their outside area blocked so they don't see everybody going by etc. Having them inside during the day (even if during the first couple of years) will help control this to. There are lots of other things you could try - antibark collars, etc. You can use the SEARCH function to find threads on this.

PUPPY CRYING - Having the crate near you during the night. A teddy or blanket with your scent on it. A clock or other reassuring sound. These might all help. Under the training forum - I would recommend reading both threads under housebreaking.

Good Luck & welcome to the forum.

Please post pics we love 'em.

Well, at night, the crate in your room would be great for that. For the day, shaker can/shake the keys and "QUIET!". Praise for good quiet... The older one will be harder to train not to bark because you've already let it go for some time. THe fact that your other dog's barking has been let go my serve as a problem. It may happen that the older one teaches the younger one to bark forever... Shaker cans/ Shake the keys should work. If they stay inside, close the blinds so they can't bark at things out the window.
