Getting your vet to issue you a script?

Does anyone out there have experience with asking their vet for a prescription for heartworm meds?

I was wondering how that works ( in the US) - do you call them up and ask them to mail you a prescription? Can they deny issuing you a prescription? I just don't know how this works.

Yes - they both had the tests done in the spring.

I know that they won;t call them into on line pharmacies - becuase they ahve a big notice on the door as to which ones they consider unethical - but I was wondering if they are allowed to deny you a script?

I am in the process of moving back to the vets that I used to use becuase the one tat I am using right now is quite far away, there is only one vet and so emergencies can be a problem, and the office staff kick quite the attitude in there and I am sick of it.

I was going to try Fosters and Smith on line for the generic heardgard plus.

I will call them and ask if they can mail me a prescription for them both. I will elt you know what they say.

Thanks Newbie.

I just went through getting a prescription from my vets....they charged me $5 for it and warned me that some online pharmacies use meds that are expired or close to being expired...we'll see.

One of the vets i worked for wouldnt issue prescriptions like that either unless there were special needs there. Like an elderly person who has a hard time getting to the vets or if the person just moved and didnt want to go to a new vet for another heartworm test things like that. She felt that it takes away her bussiness. She was a really nice vet too so i can understand her point on that.

My vet's prices actually are as cheap as ordering online. They try to keep their costs down as much as possible so you don't get bad meds from online. You could always ask for a copy of your dogs medical records as well. Heck, I know even when I go to my human doctor I ask for a copy of everything to keep in my file, so I don't think they would find it weird for you to ask for animal records as well.
