question for people involved in rescue!

We surrendered our dachshund Nicholas to a rescue a few weeks ago and we just saw is profile up on their website and they had changed his name to Nickie and are saying he is shy, shouldnt be around young children, dont know about cats, and they messed up the info we gave them on how he acted around one of our other dogs. They made it sound like we were bad people.

My problem is that he is FINE with cats and I TOLD them that, he is perfectly fine with children of all ages, and he isnt shy(though it is understandable if he is around them since everything is new)

Did we make the right choice? I know there is no going back but I just want some reassurance. The first lady we contacted didnt care anything about Nick's info she just wanted to hurry up and get him out of our house and she just seemed real cold and business type rather than friendly and telling us he will be fine. The second lady was much nicer and she was the one that picked him up and was the first rep in his transport to TN.
I am just really second guessing it now and it doesnt help that I had a VERY bad experience with a rescue a few years earlier.

Why did you surrender him to rescue?

The information that the rescue has put on the site about him might be how he has acted with them. In a new environment with strangers, he very well might be scared and acting differently toward children, cats and other dogs.

Does the rescue have a policy about not adopting to homes with young children? They might have also put that he shouldn't be around young children simply because of their policy for all dogs in their rescue.

So, before you "surrendered" him, what did you do to try and fix the problem? Anything? Nothing?

they still have to do their own temperment testing and make their own observations. it's amazing what some owners will tell a rescue just to get a dog off their hands (i'm not saying you did this).

hmmm----I would probably go back and get my dog. I'm not questioning your decision but wondering what will happen to the poor dog in the long run. This must be the utmost traumatic incident for the poor little guy and he's probably acting out of character. Wouldn't there be someone you know to give him to? Would there be a better solution for the poor little guy?

No we have been looking for a year and a half and no one we knew would take him or we didnt trust them to be a good home.

eighthounds, that was extremely rude! He was a much loved member and the family and we tried everything we could. I retrained him. Had sessions with him and dalton alone but the problem was, Nick would attack randomly, we dont know what would trigger it or anything, he would just turn around clamp down on dalton and not let go. He would also do that when we walked or when ever dalton yelped. We had been struggling with this for three years and tried everything and in the end we just had to keep them separate and that wasnt fair.

they wont let us take him back! I wish we could!!

Once a dog is given to rescue, the rescue wont give the dog back to the original owner.

I don't think eighthounds was trying to be rude... rather trying to figure out why someone would send a "much loved member" to a rescue.

My suggestion would be to not bite the hand that may offer truly great advice.

I am sorry to see you in such a position, but there really is nothing you can do now as it is out of your hands. A dog with DA towards small dogs might not have much of a chance, but I sure hope that your old dog does! I wish him the best and I hope that you are able to come to terms with him being at a rescue and trying to find a new home.
